| Anybody here use Linux? If so, what distro and why? I am currently using Ubuntu 7.10 - Gutsy Gibbon. I like PCLOS, but it didn't see all of my hardware. Ubuntu did right off the bat without any extra configuration woes. Mepis also saw all of my hardware as well.
What media player do you use. Currently, I am using Exaile. Haven't found anything better.

| I run Gentoo, mainly due to it being so customizable. Also, at the time I first got into it, the package collection was really nice, trouble-free, and just plain easy. In the last few years, though, they've really been slacking. Inertia is why I'm using it now; haven't had time to check out others.
I keep hearing good things about Ubuntu. Maybe some day I'll give it a spin.
Amarok to play music, xine for movies. |

| I have been running PCLinuxOS 2007 for a while. I am going to be using Ubuntu 7.10 shortly when I re-load my machine (I had to wipe my machine to test out Knoppmyth for a video card I am having issues with). I use Puppy Linux 2.15CE on my music computer at work. My favorite media players are XMMS and Amarok. I use Knoppmyth currently for my HTPC box to record Cable TV and over the air HDTV. I ran with Mepis 6.5 for a while at work and it is very good with it's 6.06 LTS Ubuntu base. I just needed a lighter OS for the music machine at work. | |

| I still haven't upgraded from Fiesty to Gutsy on the Ubuntu front. I'm using an older computer, it was running pretty fast, but has declined considerably over time. I mean, I'm using a AMDk6-450 mhz machine with 300 megs of ram and an 8 gig hard drive.. I probably should be running Damn Small or Puppy on it.. heh Media wise, I use XMMS for general mp3's and streams. Since my hard drive is kinda small, I just play cd's on my computer. So I use Rhythmbox for that. I was using Amarok, but it kept freezing up. I use k3b for all my burning needs.. |

| Glad to see others here using Linux. I use Exaile over Amarok because I've found it to be very simple. I rip my CD's to my hard drive's with Sound Juicer. I rip them in FLAC, because I prefer the lossless.
AriYah-- That's funny dude. With your system, you probably are right about Damn Small or Puppy.
But the thing about Linux is you don't have all the headaches that you do with MS when it comes to having a powerful enough system to run it. Linux works with old and new systems.
I really am starting to like Gutsy. I was pretty much sold on PCLOS until it wouldn't see my external HD. Everything just seems to work with Ubuntu.

| I have yet to use Ubuntu 7.10 but I have recently helped my brother in law set up a new Mythtv box with Mythbunu (Based on 7.10). Puppy linux has a handy mounting tool for external hard drives that is simple to use. I am able to use a external hard drive formatted in NTFS and read/write to it. | |

| Gutsy Gibbon here too, I run UbuntuStudio. I am a Windoze hater.
I have used xmms and beep, but right now on Totem Media Player.
I haven't tried Exalle yet, will check it out.

| Is xmms a winamp clone? Are skins available?
If I'm not using VLC for video files, my system defaults to Totem. The only problem I had was playing the Once Dead DVD. Nothing but VLC wanted to play it and it didn't look all that great either. Don't seem to have any problems with any of my other DVD's.
The only thing that I don't like about Linux is that I have to use my onboard sound. It seems that I can't find support for my Creative X-fi Extreme Gamer sound card. There is a driver on the Creative site but it seems like it might only be for 64 bit systems and my system is 32 bit.
