What does that mean? I've always wondered, but never thought to ask.

I think it's used when quoting someone/something and you know there's a misspelling or an otherwise strange phrasing....but you are faithfully quoting someone/something word for word and spelling for spelling. It's like a warning or a reminder of sorts. You are letting the reader know "hey, I know this seems a little strange...a little off"

Like Scott said, it's just a word that places the blame of idiocy on the correct person when quoting someone. For instance, if you were to quote rap lyrics, there would be more (sic)s than words to the lyrics.
