Stop trolling me and move along. You are obviously being a smartass. Can they play metal? Sure. Is that what they are known for? No.
Alex Van Halen and Neil Peart would have told you to your face that they are not Metal. Tommy Aldridge is basically a session guy that started with Black Oak Arkansas (not Metal). I guess you could consider Bill Ward Metal, but Tony Iommi said they were not!

Not trolling you, but Tommy both recorded and toured with more bands than he just did a session for in the studio. Black Oak, Travers, Gary Moore, Ozzy, Whitesnake, Nugent, Lizzy, and John Sykes.
My first concert, California Jam, I watched Tommy's solo and went home and learned what I saw. Which was basically a quintessential 80'\s metal drum solo done in 1974.
Stuff that Peart played is from a technique & theory perspective what tone tons of metal drummers emulate. Sure Rush didn't have what you could call that "metal" tone in the guitar department and in most of their latter arrangements any semblance the stuff from the mid/late 70's. It is debatable to say they were "metal" or not, especially considering what was considered metal in that period.

What I meant by “session” is that he never seemed to stay in a band for more than a few years or albums. Maybe “hired gun” works better.
Flashy technique also doesn’t mean Metal. Jazz drummers can do things that would make your head spin and jaw drop, but it’s not Metal. Peart is massively influential to prog-Metal players, but that doesn’t mean he is Metal. He probably took more from jazz cats than John Bonham.

Two of my Mt. Rushmore drummers are jazz players, they also incorporate other styles of music utilizing aspects of jazz playing.
I could incorporate 90% of the drumming from "La Villa Strangiato" into a Priest or Maiden style tune and would it be "metal" drumming of "rock" drumming?
We are talking about "drumming" and not specifically songs or bands.
Anyways, people have their opinions about stuff, especially what something is it what it isn't.
BTW, ever seen Aldridge's BOA drum solo from 74'?

I tend to categorize things. Just look past it… you still get my list of players.
Yes. I believe I have seen his BOA solos on YouTube. He’s an amazing drummer! His open hand “bongo” segment is fun to watch.
