| I am voting for the 1990's. I really wanted to cast mu vote for the current times (2010's) as it seems to be a mish mash of genres and every Pop song is just choruses and almost no verses, but I just hate the depressing crap from the 90's. I am not one of those people that feel Grunge killed Hair Metal. I believe it killed itself by becoming formulaic and too mainstream. The death of the party anthems is a part of my decision to pick the 90's, but the biggest part is this. Music, to me anyway, is supposed to be fun and take you away from the things that bother you in life every day. When every song is melancholy and the artists (from Nirvana, to Alanis Morrisette, to Pantera) keep this subject matter at the forefront of their music, it all becomes too depressing and just not...enjoyable. The final nails are the downturn of Metallica and the splintering of everything. I am probably wrong but I feel as though at the end of this decade is where all the subgenres came from. Unfortunately, there's even more nowadays. Anyway, what have you all got to say? | |

| I can't really choose. I wasn't born till the '70s, so aside from a couple of artists, the '60s are mostly irrelevant to me.
I have a pretty good working knowledge of the '70s but I didn't start listening to music till the 80s. By the late 90s/early 00s I'd pretty much stopped paying attention to what was new and hip.
Nowadays when I hear "new" mainstream/pop acts on TV (morning shows, SNL, etc.), they're pretty much junk... but then, mainstream/pop has always been pretty much junk.
I guess every decade has had its fair share of good stuff, but also its fair share of crap. Unfortunately it's the crap that tends to be remembered years later. _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

| I never thought that the 90s were a particularly bad decade for metal... you just had to dig harder to find the good stuff since it wasn't getting "mainstream" attention anymore. _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

For me, the '90s were mainly "the decade where I discovered the joy of Japanese/European Import CDs," cuz suddenly a lot of "my" bands didn't have American record deals anymore. _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

I pretty much agree, so I voted the 2010's. Creativity seems to be in a rut. Older bands are just re-hashing their old sound to appease the fans and new bands are just mimicking the old bands without adding anything new to the mix. With everyone so desperate to suck up the crumbs of a failing music industry, there is no place for creativity, just recycle what worked before and hope for the best. And the less said about radio and pop music, the better. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. It was a fantastic decade for death metal! I know you aren't into death metal very much, FF, but I happen to love it. Many, many great death metal albums were released in the 1990s.

And the less said about radio and pop music, the better. Absolutely. 2010's for me too. I gotta say there is some insanely unconventional music in the prog sectors coming 'round. Where once we had more derivative prog metal bands such as Symphony X and Pagan's Mind, things have been splintered somewhat to deliver tough-to-categorize band releases such as output from Opeth, Beardfish, Steven Wilson, etc. It's insanely original music (okay, for the most part) that sounds like it exists to virtually deconstruct popular commercial formats. It's an awesome scene to get lost in, even though the music is generally more rewarding to the patient--and repeat--listener. But as for formats relating to, I dunno, general consumption--yeah, sheer bankruptcy. My wife watches America's Got Talent and it's terribly sad to hear a young contestant presenting a new original song that's nothing but a xerox. And the crowd goes wild. I almost said the 2000's when everything started to fall apart but Indie music, cute as it was, did try to keep things organic and original to a fault.

| I would say today’s music for the most part is junk. So I voted 2010’s.Of course you still have some of the older artists releasing new music and once in a while a new band will be decent, but the majority of mainstream stuff is crap. | |

| The 1990s for me. I don't care about pop music and other genres but for metal it was a disaster. Very little of what was produced during that decade has held up over time.
The 1960s are mostly irrelevant to me other than what became the roots of metal. The 70s were very good, the 80s were the best obviously. The 00s were weird but there was some light at the end of the tunnel and the current era is very good with tons of excellent albums being released.

Most of which really sucks but is IMO still light years ahead of the vapid crap pop music has become now. So obviously I vote 2010s. Just take a look at the "artists" playing during the Superbowl (pre-game and halftime). Lots of hip hop, country and (gag) Maroon 5 as the featured act. Holy crap, if that's what's popular now this has to be the worst decade for anyone who enjoys any form of hard music. I will listen to nu-metal all day long before I will listen to Maroon 5. _________________ "The cat is the most ruthless, most terrifying of animals." - Spock in the "Catspaw" episode of ToS Season 2.

| I did vote for the 90's, but since 2000, an assload of great bands that I loved in the 80's have put out outstanding albums - Thrash has had a killer resurgence - and a bunch of bands have reunited to, at least, tour and get me out of the house. With that said, The 90's were a decade of exploration for me. I got WAYYYYYY deeper into my love of roots reggae, tons of so-called "alt bands" made an impression on me [Ned's Atomic Dustbin, Jellyfish, KMFDM, and the offshoots/side projects from Husker Du, The Pixies, etc], and King's X SLAYED EVERYTHING PUT OUT IN THE 90's. So, I guess, maybe, I played my hand too quickly. I am gonna take it back and agree with Scotty M.

Rock is in by far its least successful decade. Amongst bands who have released their debut albums in the 2010s, Ghost and Greta Van Fleet are as big as rock gets in the 2010s. Neither come even remotely close to being as big as their biggest hair bands of the 1980s, grunge bands of the 1990s, or nu-metal in the late 1990s/early 2000s.

That's why I'm rooting for Greta Van Fleet. Sure, they're derivative of Zeppelin and all, but at least it's young guys taking an interest in rock again. If they show a little success, maybe some labels will take notice and sign some more up-and-coming rock bands. Remember, it only takes one or 2 bands to make some money and then all of the sudden, every label wants in on the action! _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was.
