We've recently had our second album remastered by Jamie King (Watchtower, Chastain, Canvas Solaris, Ayreon, etc. etc.)
I can't believe the difference this mastering has made!
The songs "pop" much more. I am far from an expert on this stuff but to my ears it sounds like the mid-range has been restored and the vocals are clearer.

I’m just using my iPhone speakers, but it does seem somewhat louder and more clear. Especially the previously buried vocals. Usually, you need to remix to fix something like that.

Same. I thought you had to remix to bring up the vocals. There are so many albums that could benefit from this type of remaster in that regard.

I know! That's why I waited so long to do it. I didn't have access to the original tracks unfortunately, for both our albums.
Try it on some nice big speaker and if you play them side by side the difference is even more pronounced.
I should've never gone ahead with the previous master just in the interest of "getting it done". Bone head move! I lost the guy I wanted to work with and settled for a guy he recommended. I'll never make that mistake again. I guess you live and learn.
I'm very happy with all this. I wanna get this pressed to CD ASAP.

Part of the improvement here is that the previous master was so bass-y and bad. I think part of the improvement is adding some mids back. Just my guess.

You could always re-record the songs with the same guys if possible and get to sound like you want it to. Other people's ears are great, but if it is your creation...you know what it should sound like. Also, recording quality stuff isn't that expensive nowadays and figuring out how to play with all the toys is a blast.

Well, I can't re-record the album with the same guys. 3 of the guys have moved on. To be honest, nor would I want to. I'm on cloud nine with the guys I am playing with at the moment. Of course, I wish the other guys all the best with their future music endeavors.
I am considering recording a live album though, because I like the way our old songs sound stripped-down, more raw, and more direct. Plus the songs change here and there as time goes on and we have new people playing them. It would be a lot of fun, and present another side to the band.

Yeah, exactly. Like my plans above, releasing this digitally would be cheap. We'd just have to rehearse the setlist for a little bit then hit record.

So besides you, who is left in the band from the Overlord recording?

No one, but I wrote 9 out of 11 of those tracks.

I bought Overlord today on cd used from a local record store. From the way it looks the remastered version isn't available on cd, correct?

I got my copy on Amazon, but it is obviously not the remastered version. Need to get that one.

The remastered version is only available digitally at the moment. I am negotiating with Alone records to press the remastered Overlord on cd at the end of the year. Can't wait until this happens because I'm very happy with how this album has turned out!

I thought it was funny in the liner notes when it says: this recording contains no use of neck pickups.

Yeah, that was Matt's thing. He thought some shredders use that setting to try to sound like they are playing faster than they really are. I think some pretty reputable shredders do it so I don't think it's really much of a cheat. Even if it was, I doubt most anyone cares about anyway. It's funny the things musicians get hung up on.

Yeah, we're recording now. It's just hard to find the time. We all have kids. You know the drill. We're playing shows though.

It’s cool that you’re recording again, but “A Show of Force” has yet to see the light of day...
Do you think your family situations will make the band call it quits? I understand the family comes first, but the band is extremely slow moving to the point people are always guessing If you’re still a thing. I’m sure you can indefinitely just be a weekend warrior gig band whenever time permits. Also, maybe it would be easier for you to just occasionally record EPs instead of full length albums.
