Coming soon to our home are two black cats to be named Rusev and кошка (cat in Russian). My oldest daughter brought her 3 kittens over to play and it is making us anxious for ours to be big enough to come home.

Congrats on your new family members!
Rusev, eh? Wonder where that came from? It's too bad the other one isn't female; you could have named it "Lana".

The other one is female and I don't know why "Lana" never even came to mind!

BTW, I see a few posts back that I said I'd post pics of Squirrel which I did but in a new thread. For anyone who's interested that missed them:
He's gained a little weight since those pics were taken. He now weight 8lbs 9oz so he's still tiny by comparison to Loosie (15. and Tux (who even up to the end weight around 13 lbs)
Not so coincidentally, Loosie's lost almost a pound since Squirrel came to live here. He's such a little s**t! He just can't walk past her without taking a swipe. He's learning though; he gets blasted with the spray bottle every time he does it.

About 2 months ago we were at the shelter and saw a 12 year old calico. We decided to take her. I hate for an old cat to be stuck in the shelter for their senior years. She has adapted well, our other cat (a male) is 11 years old and had never been around cats. He is much bigger than her but she has already let it be known that she is boss.
She's a great cat, a bit needy but very friendly and doesn't look like she is 12. Hopefully she will live for several more years. We did get her history and she was given up when a woman had a baby and the baby had cat alergies. She adopted the cat at Pet Smart when it was a kitten.
Our previous 2 cats lived to be 19 and 15. Our Jack Russell lived to be 15 as well and it was tough putting him down. Haven't had a dog since as they require a little more attention and now that my wife is teaching school there just isn't time for a dog these days.

I try not to actually go to the shelter; I'd have a whole house full of cats because I'd want to take them all home. Fortunately I know a guy who runs a rescue group so I always adopt from his group. Good on you for giving a senior cat a home.

We go every Saturday to the shelter and volunteer. My daughter gets "scholarship points" for college if she gets 50 hours. I told her to get 1000 (she is a sophmore). So we go for a few hours every Saturday. We went in and saw the senior cat but didn't take her. Then the next weekend my wife said "if she is still there ask abotu bringing her home". So I asked and told them we already had one cat but didn't know how he would do with another cat. They said we could take her home with us that day and keep her til Monday and if we decided to keep her just pay the $80 on Monday and keep her. So we did. At first she just slept all the time and would not eat. We took her to our vet and she had a high fever. They gave her fluids and a shot so on top of $80 was another $130 but she recovered fast from whatever it was and is now doing great. Our male cat is on a special diet of only canned food (grain free) twice a day. He used to weight 24 pounds so they said no more dry food and two cans of "wet" food 2 times a day. I didn't think it would work but after a year he is down to a healthier 14 pounds. And for some reason she doesn't like canned food and wants dry. Since our male cat can't have dry food I have to separate them at feeding time. I found it odd that a cat didn't like canned food, have never had that before.
Here they are:

That sounds like how my household was. Tux could only eat dry food because he threw up if he ate canned. Loosie just doesn't like canned food, only dry food. So I had to put her bowl on a dresser out of Tux's reach so he wouldn't eat it.
Now that I have Squirrel it's more normal; he prefers dry food too although he will eat certain flavors of canned food. But at least I can just leave the dry food bowls down on the floor and not have to worry about who eats what.
