Although you may not recognize the name, you definitely know the character he was the first to play. It's sad to hear but he made it to 88, a good long life. RIP Godzilla.

It's on a picture of him standing with the Godzilla head similar to the one in the pic in that link. My brother bought if off Ebay years ago, framed it in a plaster Godzilla footprint frame he created and gave it to me as a Christmas present.

Pretty cool. I used to read G-Fan magazine and they organized an annual G-Fest in Chicago (and still do,I believe). They had him (and Kenpachiro Satsuma ,the actor who played Godzilla in the Heisei series) come to a few of the conventions, and by all accounts was very cordial to all the fans. I would have loved to have met him.
