Rock music legend John Wetton sadly passed away in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday, January 31) after a long and courageous battle against colon cancer.
John rose to fame with KING CRIMSON in the early '70s during the iconic "Red" era and later formed the band UK. In the early 1980s, he was a founder member of supergroup ASIA which was his biggest commercial success. The band's 1982 self-titled debut album was the biggest-selling album in the world that year and gave fans and mainstream radio the mega-hit "Heat Of The Moment".
John also enjoyed a successful solo career, including the seminal album "Battle Lines", and formed ICON with ASIA bandmate Geoff Downes. In 2006, the original lineup of ASIA reformed and toured the world several times to promote four new studio albums.
John had been planning to tour with ASIA for the band's forthcoming U.S. arena tour with JOURNEY and, following the success of his solo "Studio Recordings Anthology", to continue working on the ongoing re-issue program of his solo albums, via his own Primary Purpose label.

Well, that's a bummer. The Asia debut was one of the first cassettes I owned as a kid. R.I.P. sir.

biggest bummer of the year so far. i nearly cried over this death.
the trio of studio albums he was a part of with King Crimson (along with all the phenomenal live releases from that era) are some of the most powerful, fully realized pieces of art i've had the pleasure of digging into. he'll be sorely missed. RIP.
and Asia's first album is killer too.

I only know of his song "Heat of the Moment" with Asia. A great melodic rock classic.

Damn, that's a shame. Asia is a "guilty-pleasure" of mine; one of those commercially successful bands I shouldn't like but I always have. I have lots of memories associated with their debut because it was my final year in college and I was living in a duplex with 2 other guys that year. Because our lease ran about 4 months after I graduated I was working at a Holly Farms chicken processing plant on the graveyard shift in order to pay my rent. And Asia was on the factory floor PA constantly.
RIP.

I really like King Crimson & UK Never given Asia a chance tbh, I kind of hate that '80s melodic rock thing.

My dad had the debut album on cassette, and I was first exposed to them in 1985. In 1987, I convinced the old man to buy me Astra and Alpha, especially since they were in the cutout bin, so they were only about 3 or 4 bucks a piece. I wore those tapes out. I know Astra gets a lot of hate, but I don't care. There's always been a special place in my heart for that album from the time I was 10 years old, up to now. RIP John Wetton. You were one of my favorite singers during my childhood.

And so in less than two months we lose both musicians who first became known for playing bass and singing the vocals in King Crimson and joined a supergroup with Carl Palmer later on.

I'd say Asia isn't too far from songs like UK's Nothing to Lose, so if you like that one, give them a try.

tracks like "Time Again" are pretty proggy. They were still musicians who liked making their music sound like they weren't simpletons, haha.

King Crimson era was insane! What a great bass player and of course that voice!
My favorite song from Red. If you do not know this track please give it a listen..
