R.I.P. Jack Davis (cartoonist/illustrator)

Bummer news: legendary cartoonist and illustrator Jack Davis has passed away. I'd guess that most people know him best from his years of work for MAD, but his instantly recognizable art style has also appeared in countless other magazines/comic books and advertisements, cereal boxes, movie posters, greeting cards, children's books, and album covers.

This is a huge loss for me. Back in my younger years, Jack Davis and Don Martin were 2 of my absolute favorite artists in MAD magazine, for 2 separate reasons. There was a time when I thought I'd be the next great cartoonist to grace their pages, and it was Jack's style that I ripped off admired most. I could pick out his designs a mile away and would clip out ads that featured his work.

I can't imagine too many of those original "usual gang of idiots" are still alive.

RIP Mr. Davis. You made an indelible ink mark on my soul.

Yeah, almost all of the old-school MAD guys - Jack Davis, Dave Berg, Antonio ("Spy vs. Spy") Prohias, Jack Rickard, Don Martin, George Woodbridge - are all gone now.

Angelo Torres (who drew the TV parodies when I read the mag in the 70s) and Mort Drucker (movie parody artist) are both still alive, but retired (Torres in 1980, Drucker in 2011).  Torres is 84 and Drucker is 87.

Sergio Aragones is still an active MAD contributor at 78 years of age.

Al Jaffee (the "Fold-In" guy) is still kickin' at age 95 ... and he still occasionally produces pieces for MAD too! Respect!!
