Marillion

Any Marillion fans out there? I don't listen to much of their new stuff, but I love everything from Script Of A Jester's Tear up til marrillion.com.
Some of my favorite songs: Easter, Grendal, Garden Party, Kalaiegh, Warm Wet Circles, Estonia, Deserve, 80 Days, Man of A 1000 Faces, Lavender, A Legacy, No One Can, and Uninvited Guest.

I have Marillion's MISPLACED CHILDHOOD album (on vinyl, with a cool gatefold cover... that band always had the coolest artwork!), but haven't listened to it in years... a college roommate of mine loved that album so much that he played it constantly and eventually kinda burned me out on it... good stuff for mellowin' out to tho

I love the song "Kayleigh." I really need to dig deeper into this band, though.

I just found Misplaced Childhood yesterday at the pawn shop. Haven't listened to it yet.

After listening to that particular album twice now, I must say I really am liking the Fish era more and more (I think I've gotten used to his Peter Gabriel-like voice). If it was easy to get a hold of, I'd like to get all the Fish albums and the first few Hogarth albums which IMO are the best, unfortunatly the stores don't seem to have these in stock or even on special order.

Been meaning to check them out for years, but haven't yet.

Technically H is a better vocalist than Fish but Fish has an certain gene say qua that is unmatched (reminds me a lot of Peter Gabriel) and he is also a wordsmith and his poetry is what causes older fans to dislike material after his departure.

My favorite Hogarth era songs (the second one is sort of an Irish anthem-this version was performed with Dream Theater on 5 Years In A Livetime; the last two are from when Marillion changed the direction of the music):

One thing I thing is apparent about Marillion is the the heart of it beats in the awesome guitar work of Steve Rothery.

I picked up their Marbles album. Kinda sounds like a progressive U2.

Like Eysore I have never delved into them....

I remember ads for theirs albums in both CIRCUS and RIP magazines...

I see their stuff alotin the used bins...

I always (most likely wrongly) assumed them to be some mixture of B.O.C. and JETHRO TULL.....

That is the sound they have adopted these days. I'm not a fan of this stuff, I prefer the older material (everything before marillion.com which itself is much different from the older stuff). All the videos I have posted above, except Man Of A Thousand Faces, are the Marillion material I enjoy most.

I've heard various songs on comps and samplers over the years and always think I need to get some of their full albums. Seems like something I would probably be into.

been a big fan of theirs since about 91/92 .
although when i first heard misplaced childhood it bored the living daylights out of me!! but i rediscovered them a few years later when my musical tastes matured .
Then when i first heard BRAVE i was totally in love these guys again .
I also like fish and have seen him many times on his solo tours but Marillion with steve hogarth is where it is for me.

I've heard them, but never picked up a CD - I;ve been meaning to add them to my collection

Joker is like early Genesis, than you will love this band, and you should start with "Misplaced Childhood" which is considered the essential Marillion album, or check out " Marbles" a classic later day album from this band.

For the few of you who know and like Marillion's early stuff, I highly recommend:



I heard some of Fish's solo stuff but it was a little too weird for my tastes but I gave this a listen and picked it up. The guitarist is no Rothery but fully capable and Fish's voice is as good as ever. I like this much more than the recent Marillion albums which have moved too much away from the band's origins.

I got 3 or 4 of their albums but have never really delved into them yet, but I like 'em.

I realized quite a parallell between the history of Marillion and a totally unrelated band. None other than Van Halen. These bands couldn't be more different at first glance. Marillion is a progressive art rock band from England while Van Halen is a hard rock party band from the States. Marillion has more of a cult following and is not widely known while Van Halen is a commercial juggernaut know by just about every human on the planet. Both had very distinct vocalists David Lee Roth had a stage prescence like no one else and a very disticnt voice. Fish, while a Peter Gabriel clone had a voice that coupled with the music gave Marillion a very distinct sound and his lyrics were incredibly poetic.

But they have many things in common. Both bands have amazing guitarists. Eddie Van Halen is one of the most influencial guitarists in hard rock history. Innovated and higly skilled player who is a master of shred. Steve Rothery is not a shredder but he plays guitar with more emotion and passion than just about any guitarists out there. More than anything their history and fanbase are so similar it's quite interesting, well to me anyways.

Van Halen had a falling out leading to the departure of DLR from the band and while his replacement, Sammy Hagar, is a very capable vocalist, many fans hated him and declared Van Halen dead refering to them as Van Hagar. Many just didn't like the sound but many flat out hated Hagar. A quote from Newsradio is a good example:

"As Van Halen said, before that idiot Sammy Hagar joined and ruined them..."

Marillion started having trouble with Fish's drug and alcohol addiction and decided to give him his walking papers. He too was replaced by a very capable vocalist by the name Steve Hogarth. He too was widely hated by many Marillion fans who started declaring Marillion dead. On Youtube I read, "This band doesn't deserve to call themselves Marillion anymore." On Hogarth I've heard statements like these:

"he's a fruity pop kinda guy, which is fine if you like that sort of thing as opposed to real music."

"hogarth killed the Jester.Hollow"

"Dear Marillion. You need a more talented singer than "h" is"

"I know who this guy is....He's that idiot who thinks he can pull of Fish's tunes......"

Both secondary vocalists of these bands were not responsible for the falling out between the origional vocalists and the bands but far too many people blame them for it. Anybody else find this interesting or did I just waste an hour typing this ?

No you didnot waste an hour typing this, I found it very interesting that two bands that so different culturally and musicially and you were able to find parrells in their career paths.

I can see some similarities.

My thoughts exactly. The only song of theirs Ive ever heard is "Kayleigh" and that was overplayed to death back in the 80's. Me and my metal friends would see their promotions in our metal magazines and we all thought that Marillion sucked cuz they werent metal.

Funny thing is now 20+ years later I'm into alot of music that aint metal so maybe I should find one of those albums at a local pawn shop and give it a try. I heard they were kinda prog-ish, which is cool with me.

I recently came across this video. It's not one of Marillion's better-known songs as it was only ever a B-side, but I've always liked it.

Dig that song! They are one of those bands that have great b-sides(Lady Nina, Tux On, etc.). I like finding videos that have Andy Ward(ex-Camel) on drums. Nice to see him playing post-Camel.





Citanul, Have you picked up their two collection of EMI B-Sides? Fish era and Hogarth era box sets.

I don't have either of those, but I do have B'Sides Themselves, which is a collection of all the non-album Fish B-sides as well as Market Square Heroes (although it only contains the edited version of Cinderella Search).
