| I might as well throw my two cents in, haha.
1. Fates Warning 2. Iron Maiden (man, the first two spots are always back and forth) 3. maudlin of the Well/Kayo Dot/anything Toby Driver related 4. The Tallest Man on Earth 5. King Crimson
everything after here is only in loose order:
6. Peter Gabriel 7. Iron & Wine 8. Black Sabbath 9. Yes 10. Rush 11. Van Morrison 12. Kate Bush 13. Tool 14. Bruce Dickinson 15. Townes Van Zandt 16. Sortilege 17. Titan Force 18. Pink Floyd 19. CHVRCHES 20. Misery Signals 21. John Martyn 22. Kansas 23. Tyrant (NWOBHM) 24. The Head and the Heart 25. Protest the Hero
Naturally there's a lot I left off, too. Steely Dan, Neil Young, dredg, Local Natives, Fleet Foxes and a lot of others could easily have been put among those.

| Great list, Noah. I feel the same way I left off Motorhead and honestly I shoulda threw The Kinks in the lot and technically I can cuz I listed only 24 seeing as how I didn't really put Megadeth on the list. | |

Noah's list is equally awesome. I dunno, this would be a ridiculously tough task for me, and certainly not a concrete result. I'll see what I can pull off. It'd definitely be easier by subgenre.

It's impossible! I did my list and then listened to Screamadelica by Primal Scream and realised that they are easily a top ten band for me and that record a masterpiece but I hadn't even mentioned them, same for Radiohead.

| Mine's going to sound SO out of place... Let's begin with he two most important to me: X Japan Not the first band to get me into Japanese HR/HM, but probably the second Japanese artist after DCT to make me really love music in general. I was a sucker for the ballads like "Crucify My Love" but X and Kurenai, among others were also amazing cookers. I still don't think any metal band who has done ballads can touch X, their style was just in a different league. Dreams Come True (DCT) There are very few successful Japanese pop groups who can put out 30+ records and still be pretty solid. DCT's singer also shows you that the stereotype in which female J-pop singers have high pitched voices is not always true, and she's just a good vocalist period. They had class and experimented in so many styles while remaining in a pop vein that was accessible and smooth. This was the band that got me in to Japanese music. The rest in no particular order: Boowy D'erlanger Dead End Die in Cries Eins:Vier Fanatic Crisis KneuKlid Romance Kuroyume L'arc-en-Ciel La'cryma Christi Loudness Luna Sea N.EX.T Omega Tribe Penicillin Picasso Pierrot Ratt Rouage Siam Shade TM Network/TMN Yellow Magic Orchestra/YMO Zard | |

Yeah, the only reason I was able to do it is because I set a rule that I could only include artists I've been listening to for at least a decade. That helped a little. |

As far as 70's/80's, yes, in fact. Most of my selections are Japanese groups. Let me give you a rundown: Boowy One of the best pop-rock Japanese groups of the 80s. There is virtually no song by them that I dislike, only some that I enjoy more than others. The guitarist, Tomoyasu Hotei, was successful as a solo musician and featured on the Kill Bill soundtrack. Likewise, Kyosuke Himuro, the singer, was also successful as a solo and both of their work is pretty good. Their sound is influenced by Bowie (hence the name) and the Stray Cats. Very addictive. Recommended songs for starters: Dreamin, Marionette, Bad Feeling. D'erlanger One of the pioneers of the visual kei movement which is the conglomeration of glam, goth and punk aesthetics. Since it describes the look of the band rather than the sound, they can't all be classified the same, but there were certain styles born out of the Japanese visual scene that are commonly associated with it, and it sounds like a cross between post-punk, goth rock and metal. D'erlanger is like this. Check out these songs for a taste of them: La Vie en Rose, Sadistic Emotion, An Aphrodisiac, and I Can't Live Without You. Dead End Another visual kei pioneer. Influenced many visual kei bands and has had several tribute albums featuring heavyweights from the j-rock/visual scene. Much more metal-like but good nonetheless. Some great tracks to sample: I Can Hear the Rain, Phantom Nation, Baby Blue, Spider in the Brain, I'm in a Coma Omega Tribe Not a rock or metal band in any regard but rather a soft rock/west coast type of group, very mellow. They had three different iterations, two of them featuring different singers. Their signature sound is both catchy and mellow at the same time. Very mellow, cruising type of music. Some songs to hear: (with Carlos Toshiki:) Kimi wa 1000%, Stay Girl Stay Pure, Navigator, Aquamarine no mama de ite (with Sugiyama Kiyotaka:) Futari no Natsu Monogatari, Kimi no Heart wa Marine Blue, Light Morning, Sexy Halation Picasso They were on the same label as Omega Tribe and again, another example of 'mellow but catchy'. Although Picasso was much more eclectic, combining mellow pop with exotic sounds, and post-punk type beats. Reccomended tracks to hear: Cinema, Fantasy (these being some of their signature tracks) TM Network/TMN This was another major jpop group of the 80s. TM Network's sound was like a cross between the disco-pop of a Stock Aitken Waterman production and the eclecticness of Yellow Magic Orchestra. Songs try: 'Get Wild' was the most famous, but in addition to that: 1974, Take it To the Lucky, Your Song, Don't Let Me Cry, Self-Control, Dive Into Your Body Hope that helps. These were all in the time frame you asked. Others that I would recommend are Akira Terao, Ginji Ito, and Junichi Inagaki. These are mellow 70s/80s pop-rock artists. As for their songs... For Akira: Shadow City For Ginji Ito: Baby Blue For Junichi Inagaki: Dramatic Rain
