I have the Foundations Forums 88-93 promos that most of these tracks came from, if anyone wants the originals.

Not to my knowledge.

Deadline, I think it was, did that Hollywood Rocks set that had a bunch of demos and unsigned bands mixed in with B-level bands and bands that went platinum...but I've never seen something like this before. I'm into it, for sure.

I've given up on checking out every band from the era who pops up on a reissue/first-time issue label, because there is so much and I've just gotten burnt on it. But something this extensive is well worth the time and support, in my mind.

I know what you mean. This set is cool in theory and there is probably some cool jems buried in there. The problem is that after a few spins and the novelty wears off, you start to see why some of these bands were unsigned or these tracks we never released. They were missing that certain something to make them stand out from the pack.

I'm assuming that the Hollywood Rose featured here is the same pre-GnR Hollywood Rose featuring Axl and Izzy? Or perhaps a later incarnation after they moved on? I wonder how many of these bands featured players that moved on to bigger and better things? Or early versions of more famous bands. Byte the Bullet for example, is an early version of South Gang.

To that end, the booklet/liner notes might be the most interesting aspect of this set, if they are done well. I never knew about a pre-Southgang band--not that I'm some sort of Southgang historian or anything, but you know. Many of the songs on here, even if they end up not being anything great, could be made more interesting if they are, in fact, early bands for some of the guys who made it big (or biggish, as it's not like "Tainted Angel" is still being played on classic rock radio or anything a la "Paradise City").

Wasn't there a box set or series of albums called Hollywood Hairspray? Or a book maybe?

EDIT: From what I can tell, Hollywood Hairspray seems to be a compilation series put out by Perris Records of old and current glam bands still releasing music. Not sure if anything contained on them is old or unreleased material from back in the day. I could be mistaken though.

Agreed, looking at the pictures and reading about the various bands might be more interesting than the music itself. Smile

Yeah, but that series was a mix of demos/unreleased songs from older bands and songs from current bands in a similar style.

I bought a couple volumes (because they had Pretty Boy Floyd songs on them that I did not have) and as a whole they were average. A couple of really good songs, and mostly okay to boring songs filling it out. And these were made when the "current glam" bands (early 2000s) almost had more in common with pop punk. Retro glam/sleaze has gotten way better than it was around the turn of the millennium.

The Hollywood Hairspray volumes and the Hollywood Rocks collection differ a bit, though, as this RNR Rebels set is all unsigned bands.

Hollywood Rocks certainly contains tracks from unsigned bands, but the majority of the tracks, even if demos, are from bands that had record deals with someone (whether they were successful or not varies, but they were still signed).
