Sardonyx - Majestic Serenity (has some melodic moments, but is a pretty powerful album. Raw production with the bass out front. I really dig it.)

Symphony X - Paradise Lost (yes, probably a bit proggy, but this is one heavy release with many speed and thrash metal elements.)
Meliah Rage - The Deep and Dreamless Sleep (often mislabled as a thrash band, this band has more in common with Metal Church than Vicious Rumors than Kreator or Testament.)

In the 80's bands like Metal Church were called power metal. Now it's the dungeons and dragon, keyboard laced metal. However, I think the guy asking here is looking for stuff more in the style of Primal Fear.
