It cracks me up that the same players seem to show up for almost every tribute album. Rudy Sarzo? Check. Bruce & Bob Kulick? Check. Ripper? Check. Frankie Banali? Check.
These guys must stay on a year-round retainer just for tribute albums.

My question is how sincere are these artists in such pursuits. True homage, or cash grab?

The good news is that Geoff Tate is going to turn this album into a cabaret show!

They are professional musicians and it's a paycheck.

At least we will have an answer to the question (noone has asked ever) "I wonder what Serj Tankian would sound like singing 'Crazy Train'?"
Pass.

With Ripper singing, I might check it out.

I don't care who's on them, tribute albums hold no interest for me. Pass (again)

Their existence doesn't both me, though the only ones I've ever bothered to check out are Alice Cooper tributes (and the recent Dio tribute).
They should've just had Tim Owens do vox on all tracks though...hardly seems worth it to switch it up for like 3 songs.

If they would do tribute albums that are actually interesting...like maybe current bands covering late 60s/early 70s proto-metal songs or something off the beaten path like that then I might take notice. But bands covering the most basic 80s staples? Zzzzzzz.

All these tribute albums and how to deal with them. The only solution I see is suicide.

I only like "tribute" albums where the people doing the songs bring their own spin to them. Don't just re-play the original; if I want that I'll go listen to the original. Then again, I guess albums like those by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes aren't really "tribute albums" are they?

Yup. And these kinds of tributes are almost always terrible. There is no real passion involved; it's just a bunch of musicians recording parts and someone else putting it all together. They're lifeless.

"There is no real passion involved" That says it all...
I think anytime somebody does a cover make it your own.. Or what is the point?

Most of these compilation all star band tribute albums lack a lot. So here they go fagging out Ozzy songs now.

What would be your top 2 favorite tribute CD's -
One has to be Alice Cooper - Humanry Stew - I think Dee Snider does " Go To Hell "
someone stole the tribute CD from me - has to be good - lol - Aerosmith had a double CD tribute that I thought was good too - ohh yeah, Sebation Back. Check.
Also THE RODS ( great band ) were angry at the Dio CD tribute - It was agreat interview - and the guys were on target -
