| Now you're getting into bootleg territory. I have a set that I recently reconstructed from back in the day doing ROIO (Recording Of Illegitimate Origin) trading via the web called "A Tree Full of Secrets." Because this was pre-Wiki "we know everything about everything," there were a bunch of fake tracks on it, but there were also TONS of alternate takes, acetates, audio pulled from documentaries, etc. | |

| It's not a bad list. I could do without the endless puffing up of Dark Side, but that's my taste. If it was "just another album" in their discography, I think I would enjoy it far more. It's good, but I don't think it's as great as everyone and their brother make it out to be. I think there are songs off of The Final Cut or Momentary Lapse of Reason I'd listen to long before I'd reach for Dark Side.
On the plus side, it was neat to see a lot of deep cuts on there. Apples and Oranges is a particular favorite of mine and, of course, you have the obligatory shout out to See Emily Play, which is just a fun little song.
Of all the "usual suspects" that turned up on the list, I have to admit that Shine On is probably THE ONE, for me, that actually deserves all of the praise. I still hear new stuff when I listen to both parts of that track and it moves me every time. THAT is a timeless piece of music and, long after I turned the bassline of Money into a joke I break into when jamming with people, Shine On still has that magic.
I'd be curious to know what Roger and Rick would have picked as their favorite Floyd tracks, but that's well outside of the scope of the list.

| Dark Side deserves the classic status, despite being overplayed it's such a unique experience there really aren't any other records to compare it to. Alan Parsons recording and mix is one of his finest achievements. One of those albums that really has to be listened to all the way through to fully appreciate.
It was the first Pink Floyd album I heard and would make my list of all-time favorite albums easily. |

Do yourself a favor and don't seek out books on Syd. I read one - and it was a GOOD read, mind you - and it totally shattered any pleasant illusions I had about Syd just retiring from music and preferring the quiet life. Dude was legitimately mad as a hatter past a certain point and it's a shame there never was a "coming back" from that. Even Roky Erickson got a second chance.

| I had started reading a book on Pink Floyd, called Comfortably Numb it was a good read well the first 70 pages I read just find it hard to read these days with a little one but yeah I knew there was no coming back and that it was very tragic those tracks on Piper were very original and he was a musical genius IMO but sometimes musical geniuses get one album....

| Even his solo stuff is pretty good, but since I'm no longer a teenager obsessed with some imaginary romance of mental illness, I have to cop to the fact that only the second album, Barrett, holds up as a whole. I could spin that record all day if I had to.
Also, much as it's a sad piece of autobiography, I have a weak spot for Vegetable Man and think it's an eternal shame they never released it officially. The Jesus & Mary Chain did a particularly scorching cover of it back in their early days.

| I think that was a given after Rick Wright passed away, The Endless River was a bonus but it would be blasphemous for Pink Floyd to carry on without Wright or Waters IMO | |

| The real shame is that the band went out by this process of erosion. Waters left, Gilmour kept it going in spite of this but only for two albums and then nothing but a litany of reissues and the like.
I get that you can't have a hot streak that lasts forever, but am I the only one who can't help but look at how productive these guys were in the '70s and early '80s and then gets disappointed as hell when it comes to the late '80s and '90s from both camps?
If you count both Floyd and solo, Gilmour has put out four albums, soon to be five, since '84 when Waters left. That's roughly an album every six to seven and a half years, depending on how you count them.
On the other side, you have Waters, who has three solo albums and an opera to his name in the same span of time.
Even if you put their input together, it's still only an album every four years just about. Just makes me wonder how many ideas never saw any follow through or maybe got to the demo stage before someone lost interest or moved on to the next thing (since Waters has been "working on" his next album for more than 20 years, he's REALLY the one I'm looking at here).

| It is sad but in the 70s they were also younger, and as you say on a hot streak. There was more collaboration though by mid 70s the erosion started.
Waters seems to be more focused on milking the Wall, the documentary he was also talkin bout touring next year too i think. Dont get me wrong I love The Wall. got to see him live a few years ago it was very cool

| Another element is they were RICH AS HELL. These guys didn't need to keep recording an album every year and touring because they needed to support themselves. They had the luxury of only working when they wanted and doing only what they wanted to do. Doesn't matter that years and years would go by between releases, their legacy was already 100% secure.

Maybe my problem is that I buy into Waters' own hype about how he had to drive the Wish You Were Here sessions because everyone else was already settled into the "We're rich, let's go buy cars and crash them or whatever," lifestyle and he still had THE WORK to pursue. Sad, then, that he in particular ended up being one of the least productive musicians ever. I still wonder what Radio KAOS might have been like if he'd been free to pursue it to his satisfaction (wasn't it originally supposed to be a double?). And yes, I am a fan of that album, even if the concept is an absurd mess. The stuff he wrote for the "When the Wind Blows" soundtrack alone proves he was still writing top tier material even at that point.
