Valley's Eve - Deception of Pain
I had never heard a single note by the band, hell, or even heard OF the band. I just saw it in the discount bin with those Limb music stickers that said "aggressive power metal". That sounded good to me, and for something like 2EUR I took my chances with it.
And I was completely blown away by the album. It has to be a top ten album of all time for me.
I've now bought their other two albums (Prodigia and Atmosphere of Silence, thanks Amazon), and I've also got the entire catalogue of lead vocalist Liapakis' main band, Mystic Prophecy.

It's funny (and probably a symptom of coming up in the 80's) but a lot of stuff that instantly grabbed me has fallen off in my love of it. Still dig most of it but not to the level that was there when I first heard it.
Some that never stopped their hold on me....
Warrior Soul - Last Decade Dead Century Suicidal Tendencies - Join The Army
Of a recent years release...
LA Guns - Hollywood Forever

I'm sure there are others I could list (enjoying The Dark Ride by Helloween at the moment which gripped me much more immediately than their other albums), but this is probably the earliest:
Oingo Boingo - Nothing to Fear
Looking back, I realize half of the albums I gravitated to as a kid were those with interesting vinyl sleeves from my parents' collection and you don't get much more interesting than this.
It was punk, but not really... A bit of prog, but with tight songs... Crazy vocals that probably primed me for my undying love for everything Freddie Mercury touched... What's not to like?
Funny bit of trivia, but I wore out my parents' cassette copy of the album while always considering the second side to be the "beginning" of the record because it started with my favorite song.
I will say, I become an audio snob on this and the follow-up record because, on vinyl, these songs kick your ass. On CD, they're really thin and anemic. The sound of the gang vocals that come in on the second chorus puts hair on your chest in analog. In digital, it just makes your nose itch. And my metaphor has been horribly derailed...

Me too. I love this album. It was a dust collector at VIRGIN until I picked it up. Not knowing what to expect. But I was blown away.

Aw geez, there are tons, but off the top of my head.. Metallica - Kill'em All Warrior Soul - Salutations from the Ghetto Nation Ramones Mania Loudness - Thunder in the East Barren Cross - Atomic Arena Deliverance - s/t Trouble s/t (1990)
Aaaaaaaand many more...
I can agree with you on Atomic Arena and Deliverance S/T. I'd add:
KISS - Destroyer - first album I ever got. Van Halen - S/T - Birthday present shortly after it was released (my 9th birthday). Killer album! KISS - Creatures Of The Night - after some lackluster years, this one KILLED it Def Leppard - Pyromania Iron Maiden - Piece OF Mind - my first Maiden album... I knew the hits from TNOTB, but this one blew me away. Metallica - Ride The Lightning, Slayer - Hell Awaits, Mercyful Fate - Melissa/Don't Break The Oath, Exodus - Bonded By Blood - got most of this in a short period of time, all blew me away and introduced me to trash/speed/underground metal \m/ The Cure - Wish - love that album!!!!
As far as more recent: Iron Maiden - A Matter Of Life & Death - tied with Piece of Mind for my favorite Maiden album... blew me away at first listen, took it to the next level when I saw them play the whole thing live and I still love it

Great album. I was also surprised at how awesome Rob Rock solo is.

Too many to name but here I name one:
AC/DC- Highway to Hell- This was the album that began my love affair with music. Heard it at one of those anti- rock ralleys at First Baptist Church of Largo, they played the title tune, told some half baked story about the song being played at a Satanic funeral. Personally I heard it, loved it, never heard anyone sing with as much braggido as Bon Scott, went out and grabbed the album that Monday when I talked my father to go to Kmart so I could buy the album.

Guns n' Roses - Appetite for Destruction Megadeth - So Far, So Good, So What and Peace Sells Anthrax - State of Euphoria
Those albums hit me like a ton of bricks when I heard them for the first time and opened my ears and eyes to a whole new world of music.

Ok, this may be the most worthy story I've ever heard about getting turned on to an album.
