Subject: Better solo albums, Hagar or DLR? Wed Jan 29, 2014 7:52 pm
The VH thread had me wondering, of the first two lead singers of Van Halen, who's solo albums do you prefer? I like both, but i'd say DLR wins for Eat Em and Smile alone, since Sammy, despite having more albums, is inconsistent (great songs like There's Only One Way to Rock are followed by mediocre IMO songs like Cant Get Loose).

1...2...3 Lock Box ! Hagar had a better selection overall. After Eat Em And Smile, Roth's output sloped downward.

Hagar.
I find DLR's solo career to be the more inconsistent one.
Neither compares to the mighty VH, though (not counting VH III).

Easily Sammy for me. In fact I like Sammy's solo albums a whole lot more than I like any of his albums with Van Hagar.

I'm a Hagar fanboy so Sammy it is! Got every album he's ever done, come to think of it I got all the DLR albums as well.

Not even close. Sammy Hagar. DLR Van Halen might be better, but for solo output Hagar has some truly classic material, DLR not so much.

Never been a fan of Hagar and also wasn't crazy about DLR's solo output. I vote neither.

Standing Hampton through VOA are gold.

Sammy is great as a solo artist!
Roth had a few really good songs with Steve Vai, but most of his stuff later on was inconsistant. He went from some kind of lounge singer crap to failed attempts to revisit his VH days.

I think Standing Hampton is the worst of his pre-VH albums.

Interesting. There's a lot of good songs on there:I'll Fall In Love Again, There's Only One Way To Rock, Heavy Metal and Sweet Hitchhiker are all essential.

I think Hagar's albums are generally full of filler with a couple of good songs. All you need from him is a greatest hits album because digging deeper into his catalog is not worth it.

Same could be said of DLR's solo albums... "Ladies Night In Buffalo" anyone?

Overall, I'm much more of a Roth fan because of his work on the early VH albums. But as a solo artist, I think Hagar was much better.

I just find it weak and uninspired, especially compared to what came before ('Danger Zone' and 'Street Machine'). I really only like "I'll Fall In Love Again".

Sammy's songs are shit . I also find some of Roth's releases underrated. So Roth it is.

David Lee Roth by far, I do like Sammy Hagar's solo material, but DLR by far.
'Eat 'em and Smile' perfect 'Skyscraper' maybe dated and bit more pop in places, but the man was not afraid to take chances and gives Steve Vai free reign on this disc
A Little Aint Enough- Tries to find a balance between his first two solo albums, and few missteps along the way, but the fact he encouraged a very sick Jason Becker
I could on to his other solo albums, and another important fact, DLR also had an element of fun

DLR. I've like all of his solo stuff, barring crazy from the heat. The guitar alone is far superior. I like Sammy, but I'm not really all that big of a fan. A few songs, that's about it. I think Sammy's best work is I never said goodbye and that is probably due to Eddie playing bass. I really enjoyed Eat 'em and Skyscraper. No excuses, just plain out really dug those two albums.

I used to be a fan of Hagar's solo stuff back in the 80's, haven't listed to anything from either in a very long time, never owned anything by DLR, and am rather shocked anyone would pick his stuff over Sammy!
