The "new" E.L.O. song "Long Black Road" is a cool little rocker, the soundtrack also features a new recording of 10538 Overture and a solo Jeff Lynne song.

Dug up my Alton Ellis albums and figured I'd start with 'The Best Of' as a refresher. Alton is basically the Rocksteady/Reggae version of Otis Redding, Sam Cooke and Brenton Wood.

That Kinks album is my favorite by them.
I think I've told this story before but when I was in college, we used to frequent this real hole-in-the-wall dive bar called The Elbow Room because they had 10 cent per glass beer for happy hour. They also hired local bands to play and our favorite was called NightRider. NightRider would play mostly covers but they also sprinkled in some originals. Most of their sets opened with a song about somebody lamenting the fact that they couldn't find their favorite DJ on the radio anymore.
Anyway, my friend and I saw this band so many times that we eventually started helping them unload their equipment and set up. We finally asked them if the song they typically opened with was a cover or an original and they told us it was "Round the Dial" by The Kinks. I went out and bought "Give The People What They Want" the next day.
So, beside the fact that the songs on that album are simply great, I also have that memory attached to it hence it's my favorite.

Thanks for sharing that great story, this one of my favorite albums by the Kinks also, and was first Kinks album I heard, our rock radio station at the time was going thru a 'college rock format', they played what at the time was off center bands such as Talking Heads, Adam and the Ants, sprinkled with your usual Led Zeppelin's etc, the one song from classic rock band that made the cut for that special format was then Kinks single 'Destroyer'
