This probably won't have much appeal to most folks here, but I'm liking it. It's a bizarre coupling for sure, but somehow works. Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day has teamed up with Norah Jones to record an album of Everly Brothers songs.
Here's the offical press tag...
Quote :
2013 collaboration between Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong and Grammy winning Pop songstress Norah Jones. Foreverly is an unforgettable collection inspired by "Songs Our Daddy Taught Us", an album of traditional Americana songs reinterpreted, recorded and released by The Everly Brothers in 1958. The album captures the beauty of the Everly's stunning close harmonies to create a moving and powerful testament to these traditional ballads.
It's very, very mellow as would be expected if you're even the least bit familiar with Norah Jones, but certainly out-of-left-field for the Green Day frontman.
It's not offically released yet, but you can play samples and full songs on Amazon.

I know many of those songs since I grew up with Mom spinning those records so I listened. And I didn't hate it which means i'm getting old.

Yup, me too. 5 or 10 years ago, I would've pooped all over this. Now, not so much. Plus my wife listens to Norah Jones and I kinda like it too.
Perhaps if I got this album for my wife for Christmas, I could, you know, borrow it every once in awhile.

My Mom loves the Everly Brothers.... Is it just me, or is this an even more random pairing than when Jack White did a record with Loretta Lynn?

Billie Joe, inspired by Metallica and Lou Reed's Lulu decides to hook up with Norah Jones and release an album.....

Ugh, Jack White. For some reason I can't stand the guy, it's like he's trying too hard to be hipster cool.

Same here. I don't like that dude. He tries too hard to be eccentric and weird.

I could care less about Jack White usually but I enjoyed the film "It Might Get Loud". I've known plenty of people over the years more self-consciously eccentric than him.
I could also care less about anything related to Green Day but since I'm a casual fan of Norah Jones (who I've seen live and she's the real deal) I'm sure I'll give this one a listen on Spotify.

I'm the opposite. I don't give a rat's ass about Norah Jones but I usually like Green Day so I, too, will give this a shot. Which I guess is the point of this collaboration...

Weird. It was that movie that mostly formed my opinion that he's a smacked ass. It was a cool flick though.

My wife got this album for me for Christmas and it's really good. The songs are really dark and depressing. I guess they were originally old folk songs that the Everly Brothers recorded with their own spin and now Billie Joe & Norah are taking a shot at them.
If you like songs about lonliness, death, prison, regret, and despair sung with beautiful harmonies, sparse instrumentation and a slight country twang, this is the album for you. Highly recommended.

I saw it at Starbucks so I was turned off because that means it's ultra hipster cool. I know you wear the skinnies when you listen to this. I'll stick with Johnny Cash and his spare songs of loneliness, death, prison, regret and despair.

The Johnny Cash reference is a good comparrision. If you liked his Rick Rubin/Def American recordings, folks should dig this too. Just add more vocal harmonies.
I was on the fence about picking up this album too, but since it was a gift, no worries. Let the hipster douchebags fight over Vampire Weekend or whatever the hell they listen to. F**k Starbucks too

Last year Elvis Costello got together with The Roots for an album...it's cool when opposites work together and can pull it off.

That Loretta Lynn album that Jack White produced is essential. So damn good. In fact, the title track is the song my mother and I danced to at my wedding (my wife and her father danced to "The Rainbow Connection"--good music all around).
I saw this record in Starbuck's today, and couldn't help but wonder what 25-years-ago Billie Joe would think of this situation. Now Billie Joe probably doesn't care what that young punk thinks, of course.
Anyway, the point is that Loretta Lynn album rules, and so does Starbucks.
