Collection habits

I get on kicks of certain bands and start looking for their stuff. Usually doesn't take much for me to get on a kick.

I've never collected by year of release. Frankly, I don't give a rip about when music is released. I do buy new releases by favorite bands as soon as they are released, and I'll usually give some new bands a go as well.

I have to agree with this, my personal buying habit is I go straight to Amazon and buy them directly from them but recently I scored a disc that cost tons on Amazon but was a bit cheaper on ebay and bought it from ebay, but that is not my usual buying habit.

On the flip side, vinyl prices on Ebay are outrageous. I use to get vinyl cheap on Ebay, now everything sells for premium prices. Rarely am I the only bidder on a vinyl anymore.

In related note, talking to the owner of the used shop I was in on Saturday, he said cd sales and trade-ins are slowing down and he's been selling/receiving more vinyl lately. There is a definate resurgence in the format. Certainly not enough to save the industry, but a resurgence nonetheless.

On FB I belong to a group called the Vinyl Community and I am always surprised how many new releases get issued on vinyl.

amazon gets most of my cd money. I think they are pretty hard to be selection and shipping wise.

Amoeba has been decreasing the size of their CD sections and increasing the LP sections. For the past several years LPs have been the only physical format whose sales are on the upswing. I believe they went up 21% in 2012 compared to the previous year. Still only about 1% of all total sales, but it's a good niche for brick & mortar stores to invest in.

That Amoeba vinyl section is starting to threaten to over swamp the metal section in the back. Might have to expand the metal section into the back jazz area.

One thing I've noticed at a lot of places is the vinyl buyers seem to be pretty young. At least not the usual suspects buying vinyl. Here's hoping the trend continues.

My local Hastings is even starting to buy used vinyl.
