| So, I'm going back in time and buying up albums from all those death metal monsters of the 90's. Monstrosity, Autopsy, Mortician, all of that. Now, I've had at least a little experience with all of these bands in the bast, all but Obituary. I'm the kind of person who usually buys up a bands entire discography as soon as possible, but I've heard that their most recent albums have had a bit of mixed reception.
Opinions and such? | |

| all of Obituary's albums are top drawer. even the recent ones are very good. of course, Cause of Death & The End Complete will always be their best imo. _________________ | |

This. I concur, but don't forget the charm of the debut, Slowly We Rot. Of the latter ones I have heard, I think I like Darkest Day the best and think it is closest to the greatness of the early albums.

| I have all of the old ones and they're all worth owning. Slowly We Rot is by far my favourite.
As for the new ones, I have Frozen In Time and I do enjoy it, but they seemed to slow things down a bit and go for more groove. It's pretty cool, but not essential.

| "Most Recent"? Did they not break up years ago? I know James Murphy is the [still living] King of Death Metal riffs and I pretty much love most everything he has played on. His production credits are 50/50. Regardless, I think Chuck and James pretty much started the whole FLA Death Metal thang, right? Nasty Ronnie be damned. | |

| Obituary are the classic death metal band for me pretty much. Probably my favorite guitar tone out of any band. | |

| I'm not too into death metal, but I have always liked Obituary. I haven't heard anything after Frozen in Time, but if you like death metal at all, I think their first four albums are pretty much required. | |

| I agree with mc666. Whereas some are better than others you can't go wrong with any of their releases. I would also suggest these 90's FL death metal bands in addition: --Brutality --Resurrection --Massacre (hard to find but available on iTunes cheap) | |

They broke up around 2000, but reformed a few years later.

| Really good band - got to meet them several years ago very chillaxed guys.
I think their newer albums have lacked a bit though and it is imo their first 2 - 3 releases that are their best and hold most value for me.
They were definitely influential on the early death metal movement.
Still, I like some of the other early dm bands just a bit better stuff like Malevolent Creation, Massacre, Immolation, Morbid Angel, Autopsy

Agreed. Every album is worth getting. My favorite will always be World Demise, as it was my introduction to the band. But yeah, Obituary is required for any death-metal fan.

| Obituary is the AC/DC of American death metal. You pretty much know exactly what you're going to get on every album. That said, their first 3 records are total classics, notably Cause of Death. | |
