The most overrated bands!

I'm relaxed. I know what your saying, I just felt I had to stick up for those dudes, that's all.

I think Stratovarious was in a nice groove for 2-3 CD's about 10 years ago, but since then they have become about the most formulaic band ever.
I liked Q.R.'s Rage for Order a lot at the time, although I played it out. Mindcrime seemed self seroius to the point of being geeky, which is why I don't like some Dream Theatre stuff either. In fact the only Sci-Fi story concept that I ever liked was Iced Earth Dark Saga.
As far as classic rock goes, I think the Who Live at Leeds makes a nice alternative for those of us who never got the Stones or the Beatles.

Just out of curiosity, why do people hate Pantera so much? Always thought Dime was a great player, and they had a fast agressive sound. Just curious?

I don't know why people would hate Pantera. I think some of us (such as myself) like to pretend to be elitist; maybe it's a combination of that and the fact that popular bands, just by virtue of being popular; often get played for us by other people; at a time when we might not be in the mood to hear them. I think there is a difference between feeling tired of a band becuase it is ubiquitous; and hating them. I am tired of Zepplin, Metallica, Pantera, and Korn: but I still like them in principle. That is different from Tool or Meshuggah; neither of whom I could stand from the beginning.

i loved Meshuggah, up until after Destroy Erase Improve... when everyone started making them out to be better than they actually were. that doesn't mean they are bad, just over hyped to the point of exhaustion.

i agree with Sax about power metal in general.

Yea, I don't get that either. It seems that people either love them or hate them. There's no middle ground. The music was aggresive, great guitarist, decent singer (at least on the first 2 albums). My guess is that Phil's antics and macho-BS ranting turned people off. At least those guys were keeping metal alive and in the mainstream during the lame alt-grunge-rap-rock of the 90's.

Oh, I'll get killed for this, but I even liked their pre-Phil teenage stuff. Sounds like vintage Pretty Maids to me. Probabley embarrasing to Phil; but not that bad if listened to on it's own terms.

Personally I have just never liked Pantera. They have a dumb sounding "tough-guy" vibe to their music and vocals. I've just never heard anything in their music that appealed to me. They are not like any metal from before them. One the one hand you could say they were original or innovative or whatever, and to an extent they were (though Shannon (Lurideth) pointed out the similarity between them and Exhorder, and it's definitely there...and I don't like Exhorder much either). But to me what they did doesn't have much value. So it's fine to do a new thing, but if it sucks, then new =/= good. That's why I don't like them.

My feeling get closer to hate because I don't feel they are quintessential metal, but they seem to be seen as the very definition of metal by the general public and to little wannabe metalheads. Ok, that last comment was a bit harsh, and it is a broad and untrue generalization, but it does, to some extent, convey how I feel about them.

Then add Phil's image and their popularity, and you have a recipie for hate.

I don't actually hate them, but my dislike is strong.

Umm... didn't Pantera pioneer the "nu-metal/rap-metal" movement with their groovy sort of metal sound? I think that's why a lot of this die-hard metalheads hate them.

New Slayer is decent... not as classy as old though.

I just wanted to pop in and say that threads about "overrated" bands are overrated.

One person's "overrated" is another person's "genius".

sovdat, have you heard "The New Age of Terror" or "Assassins of War"? Just curious how any thrash fan could not enjoy these albums.

No, I've heard only Hate, Violence and Barrage for now. I'll check those two in the future!

Yeah I haven't heard much Hirax but what I have heard is pretty cool. The voice is a little different...and sometimes I'm not a big fan of it but still it's METAL!

I just realized...wow, we've got a lot of 13 year olds haha.
Regardless, Pantera is way overrated and Slayer. I can't say Slayer enough, I'm sorry. As for Nirvana and Slipknot...neither are metal bands. But regardless as bands, I can't stand either of them. PERIOD!!!! I don't wanna seem hostile but, well I am. Nirvana is just depressing sounding all the time and Slipknot can't remember how to sing well underneath all the screaming and yelling.

And Slipknot is just Nu-Metal all the way. It's like it's PAST nu-metal and into "Death Nu-Metal" or something. The band just took the worst parts from both genres and somehow has made obsurd amounts of money on it. Seriously though, only a few minutes of Slipknot and already I want to kill people...not because of their stupid message in the songs, just because it REALLY grinds on my nerves. It's like a gnashing of teeth mixed with scratching a chalkboard while scratching forks on a plate.

Overall....I just don't like Slipknot.

And although I'm REALLY REALLY liking Dogman lately, I've never been able to get into King's X, even though I ADORE Galactic Cowboys. I got The Horse the Bud Bought for $4.25 recently...and it was a new copy!!! But yeah, King's X isn't bad, but I don't understand why people say they sound like Galactic Cowboys all the time. Who does everyone like better though? Cowboys are my pic.
