| can you get us a screen capture of the box that pops up? that'd be helpful. it could be just a case of malware, especially if it's trying to push a way to "fix" the disc problem. _________________ | |

Malware infection from a porn site? if it's a box that keeps popping up then have it scanned, MALWAREBYTES is a free and powerful tool though it would be best to post a screen shot of it (just pess ALT + PrintScreen then paste it using windows paint, save as jPeg)

It takes care of malware like that.

Haha, nowadays I second that. After I took a Linux class this last fall I switched to Ubuntu and have loved it!

Sure sounds like a malware infection. I had a nasty one of those last year. Damn thing kept telling me my files were corrupted and I needed to run a check. Popup looked just like a Windows popup. WHen you ran the "Fix" program, it came back and said it had fixed most of the problem but to completely fix it, I need to click this link. That's when I realized I'd been had. Things are really sneaky too. This one actually changed a ton of critical files on my drive to "hidden" making me think they'd been wiped out. The frustrating thing is I have no clue how I got it. I don't go to porn sites, I don't open attachments from people I don't know, I don't go to fileshare sites; no clue where it came from. I tried several fixes and eventually got rid of most of it but since my laptop was 5 years old already I figured I'd just get a new one and keep the old one for storing music files.

In the past I had that a few times on my desktop. I've backed up files and wiped the hard drive at least 4 times on that confounded machine (it is a seven year old computer).

I would like to try Mac, but I don't have the money for that right now and I don't need anymore credit card debt.

Very simple, looks nice, lots of software available, and you can always leave a Windows partition in case of emergency. And of course free

Ubuntu & Mint are also very easy to learn. _________________

| The Mac OS is built on a unix platform as well. I have Windows installed on a separate partition but I literally never use it, I might log in about once every couple months.

| I've had this laptop for a while running Windows 7, and the only issue I've had was trying to getting all my old favorite games to work like Diablo II. I've never had a problem with viruses with any Windows PC.
