Similar experience I was not quite that young, I was 13 or 14 and 'borrowed' my brother's Thick as a Brick album and was fascinated one song could take up two sides of the album, when 'Crest of Knave' came out I then started collecting them and have been a major fan since then.

I still have the original 'Stand Up' album where its a pop up caricature of the band on the inner sleeve and is on my list to upgrade to CD sometime next year
