I am a bit late to the party but these guys totally took me by surprise. Been crankin' their stuff quite a bit lately.
Both eras of Suffocation seem really good, older stuff is a bit rawer and has that old school death metal sound but even the new stuff retains that part of Suffocation albeit sounding more brutal.
If you are already into death metal and like bands like Nile, Suffocation is not too far off - perhaps a bit more brutal sounding but also 'catchier' (sorry can't think of a better term) - with more hooks in their material.

I saw Suffocation live when they opened for Carcass on Carcass' reunion tour back in '08. The vocalist talked about loving Wal Mart because he can go buy all kinds of things like chainsaws and axes for when his wife won't shutup. I knew he was joking of course. Very awesome band.

The singer, Frank Mullen is nowadays compared a lot to Bruce Willis. I saw quite a few Suffocation videos on youtube where people call him the Bruce Willis of Death Metal. I think in part it is his looks but there's also a video of him wielding a pump-action shotgun.
In any case, these guys sound very ferocious and deliver quite a decent amount of variety on their albums. It's not just non-stop blast beats for 40 minutes. There's plenty of hooks in their riffs and a lot of their songs seem to have these slower mid-sections where guitars go all crunchy before launching into a technical guitar solo.
I'm in the process of buying all their albums.

I own Effigy of the Forgotten and Pierced From Within. I dig them both, and like Pierced From Within the best.

Too bad they were one of the most copied/cloned bands in the 90s.

Always found them, along with Cannibal Corpse and Bloodbath to be the only death metal band with catchy songs.

Try Morbid Angel of old and Malevolent Creation too. I think you'll dig those two if you like the other 3 you mentioned.

Will do. I also enjoy what I heard of Deicide but the lyrics are so full of what can only be described as unreleased teen angst that I can never take 90% of their songs seriously.

As much as I love Death Metal, I could never get into Deicide. I don't really care for those really graphic Satanic lyrics, though I don't mind them with bands like Venom or Slayer but for some reason I find Deicide to be in very poor taste. I guess what pisses me off the most is Glenn Benton's childish attitude. He comes across as a grade A as*hole.
Again, I can tolerate most other attitudes in metal but when it comes to Glen Benton to me he's like one of those cheesy over the top wrestlers.

I have Suffocation's s/t and Blood Oath, I need to pick up some more.
Really hits the spot when I'm in the mood for some quality death metal.

I have everything by them too and am a long time fan. Live Effigy the best of them all, but Pierced from Within also kills! I also like Breeding the Spawn, but the production is bad. Those are my 3 all time faves by the band. The newer stuff is good too, but nothing like the older material.

I only own Pierced From Within. But every time I break that out I say to myself "why don't I have more Suffocation?". I see a lot of the newer releases used all the time but keep hoping to score the older ones.
For someone that loves Pierced what would be one of the newer releases to pick up?

Breeding the Spawn has some of the best bass playing in the history of metal.
Almost jazzy!
