| This is something I always thought would be great if it ever happened, but I'm thinking ultimately it will not...
http://www.christianpost.com/news/metallica-and-megadeth-to-create-supergroup-53856/
I think when it comes right down to it, James will veto the idea, but maybe I'm wrong. Does this project just involve James, Lars, & Dave? Does it include Kirk (who I think would have to be inlcluded). Who plays bass?

| IF (a very, very BIG if) they could dial back the egos and truly collaborate, this could be cool. Not sure that many big egos in a room would be a good idea though. Stranger things have happened... | |

| I doubt itll happen, I can see Lars being on board but not James, remember James was the dude who drove Newstead out of Metallica just because he wanted to do Echo Brain as a side project.
Personally I think if it did happen and it did well it would boost James and Lars more than Dave, Dave's already awesome!

| If it were to happen at this point, Metallica have nothing to lose. Especially someone like James who is an icon for most metalheads.
At this point of their careers, neither Megadeth nor Metallica have anything to lose or anything more to prove either. Whatever competition they had between them, friendly or otherwise means little after 30 years of successful albums and tours.
If these guys can tour together, they can also release a collaborative album.
This wouldn't have happened 20 years ago, and it wouldn't have even happened in the 90s or early 00s. At the time, at least in the 90s both Megadeth and Metallica were battling for relevance (as were a lot of other metal bands). The climate just wasn't right for something like that to happen then. And this competition I would say lasted until the early-mid 00s.
However, I think the last 10 years have opened up the gates to so many different styles of metal and collaboration, combination and permutation of genres that anything is possible. The fall of a centarlised promotional tool, the demise of the idea that only a few can lead and the rest are to follow also makes this possible.

20 years? It wouldnt have been a possiblity 10 years ago Your right neither would have anything to lose but I think Metallica has gone very stagnant and something like this would give them a boost I think

| Depends how you see them going stagnant -
From the perspective of studio albums: they have run out of ideas. Death Magnetic was good but it sounded tired and forced. They do not have the energy of younger bands but moreso they lack the passion for writing something that can stand side by side with their classics.
Look at a band like Kreator, they have been around for nearly 3 decades but they keep going from strength to strength with every new album. Sure the 90s saw them experimenting outside of thrash but that was just a short phase. Similar story with Destruction, Sodom, and Holy Moses. They all still share the same passion for aggressive music.
The biggest difference is their bank accounts. When you have enough money to live without worries, and it takes little effort to make it, your perspective of your personal life and situation changes. It is hard to be pissed off at the world when so many things do not affect you and are not relevant to your day-to-day life.
Such is life for Metallica now. They live in a bubble which they created for themselves. I do admire the heck out of them for having done that for themselves. I wish I could do the same.

| If james & lars were smart, they would at least try something in the studio or even in a "garage" and jam and see what happens.
WHAT I THINK really ought to happen, is Kirk and Dave cutting heads, just a jam and them duelling solos on the spot and see what happens.
Obviously the fanboys of either one will say their hero "won",
It would kind of be like if we seen Mick Taylor and Ron Wood trading solos if both were onstage for The Rolling Stones, or watching Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page duelling against each other in The Yardbirds.

| It could happen... No one thought there would ever be a "Big 4" tour either. The proposal is that it will be half Metallica and half Megadeth. Hetfield/Ulrich and Mustaine/Ellefson...
If anything, Kirk will try to veto it because he's not involved. Lars is more open to it because he's friends with Mustaine.

| James doesn't even really like Dave, no matter how much Dave tries to reach out to him.
This will never happen. All the metal power and $$$ of Europe cannot make this happen the way it made the Big 4 happen. Playing a show together and a meaningful musical collaboration (while alienating your other band members) is a very different thing.

| Well, for me personally the last Megadeth album I can enjoy throughout is Youthanasia. Endgame is their best work this side of 1994, but still not an album I'll be reaching to listen to anytime soon...
If they ever get together, it should be for an old-school live shows playing old tunes. Recording anything new would be a mistake - in my personal opinion once again.

| If they put duct tape over Lars' mouth, if James stopped trying to sing melodically, if they let Dave write the majority of the riffs, and if it's a thrash album, then it might be worth hearing.
Realistically I'd be surprised if those three lasted a week in the studio before it escalated into a fist fight, so I have to say I can't see it happening.

This. The only reason I could see a team up between the two would be if James sang some of Dave's songs so that an actual singer was singing them. Otherwise, there's not much point, to me. *Or vice versa, too. They could get Shawn to replace Lars on drums and Dave to replace Kirk on guitar. Actually, that probably wouldn't sound too bad, but still, there's not much point to it.

Nope. And there are three egos about the size of Jupiter (and that's individually) that'll see to that.
