I like his later (more avant-garde) stuff like "Sun Ship" and "Interstellar Space". However, that stuff isn't everyone's cup o' tea. Starting out, you can't go wrong with "Coltrane (aka PRESTIGE 7105)", his Impulse! Retrospective, or his live stuff from the Village Vanguard. To totally blow your mind without drugs, listen to the "Ascension" LP. Pure beautiful chaos.

Most Trane fans I know (including myself) end up focusing on the post-1964 recordings, starting around the time of Quartet Plays is when the outward leaning stuff really kicks in.

Meditations is a must-own.
