| The downside with greatest hits albums is that often in my experience I've ended up buying all the cds of the band anyways, making the greatest hits irrelevant.
Such has been the case for me with Rainbow, Deep Purple, Megadeth, Yngwie, Judas Priest, and soon to be Saxon(working on getting the back catalogue right now.)
On the other hand, I do have a Cinderella greatest hits and I don't feel any urge to buy anything beyond that.

very true. I have often found after getting all the cds, the greatest hits leave off the really good stuff, unless its Ratt. _________________

There was a time when that was more valid, back when a Greatest Hits really just contained just the hits. Nowadays, most Greatest hits albums tend to tack on a few "new" or unreleased tracks to entice suckers like me that feel the need to have everything. But I get what you're saying. _________________ I used to be with it, but then they changed what "it" was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too.

On the flip side, I have a coupla Greatest Hits comps that I bought, listened to and then decided "Yea, this is probably all I'll need." Primus and Ratt come to mind. Ditto. Stratovarius' THE CHOSEN ONES did it for me with that band. That doesn't really work though as they've made several awesome albums. Visions, Destiny, Infinite... I dunno, after I got Strato's CHOSEN ONES I picked up a few more of their CDs and they all sounded pretty much the same to me, so I ditched the others and just kept the best-of comp. _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"

That's funny you mentioned RATT, because I'm in the same boat, but for different reasons. At this point, I refuse to buy "Out of the Cellar" or "Invasion of Your Privacy" based on the fact that these albums just don't sound very good anymore. They need that Deluxe Edition feel that various other bands like Motorhead, Judas Priest, Anthrax, Black Sabbath, Whitesnake or Def Leppard have gone with over the last couple of years.

| They're great, but I also dislike the way companies have changed it to adding a new track or "rarities" , instead of being actual greatest hits that you can sell or give away once you like the band enough to buy the rest of their albums. I guess you don't consider live LP's to be greatest hits? as some like Cheap trick Live at Budokan,& KISS Alive II, I played to death as I only had a few other albums by them at the time Some Greatest Hits albums that really got me into looking further - Alice Cooper's Greatest Hits Black Sabbath Sold Our Souls for Rock N Roll double LP (with the weird picture gatefold of a chick in a coffin) The Very Best of Peter Frampton The WHO - The Kids Are Alright dbl-LP and about 7 years ago when I moved into a new place with barely any belongings, (besides first buying RUSH '2112' on cd), I picked up The Best of The Stampeders | |

I actually think it is nice to add the tracks - it is a nice chance to get the tracks without having to fork over a ton for Japan versions, etc. It is very much though dependent on the track being offered. _________________

| I usually go for best ofs (or greatest hits) if i wanna get introduced to a band, or if i just feel that they're not worth buying their entire catalogue.
Sometimes, the best of makes me wanna explore more.

| Well, I remember (long ago) getting The Doors Greatest Hits first, then getting all their stuff, but that was a rare instance.
I agree with some artists, all I want is their Greatest Hits. I bought Tom Petty's Greatest Hits for the song "Ballad of Mary Jane" my all time favorite Petty song.

| I'm a big fan of Greatest Hits by bands. 99% of the time they are the best quality as far as remastering and such. Some bands the only part of thier catalog that is remastered is their greatest hits and anthology's.
Boston's Greatest Hits comes to mind in that it contains two remastered tracks from "Third Stage" and that album still has never been remastered (at least not by Tom Scholz himself). So that makes that greatest hits cd worth listeing to now and then.
another cool thing about greatest hits is on vinyl. some bands or artists all I want on LP is their greatest hits. It usually gives a pretty good overview of a band and has all the hits you want. Also some bands their early work is impossible to find, but you can always find a greatest hits by almost anybody. So that's cool.

| I just picked up a Greatest Hits disc today: Winger is one of those bands that had a few songs here and there that I dug but not enough to get me to pick up a full album. When I saw this in the $5.00 bin at Wal-Mart I went "Woo hoo! Cheap shortcut!" _________________ "If you're a false, don't entry, because you'll be burned and died!"
