They leave behind a somewhat prolific legacy. They were okay, I have The Ethereal Mirror, Hopkins and Supernatural Birth Machine. Lee Dorian's voice was kinda shitty though, almost like Anvil.

Well, Dorian was never supposed to be a "singer" in the melodic sense. His vocals fit the vibe of Cathedral perfectly, IMO.

One of my favorite bands to jam to. The only album I'm missing is the latest one. I thought they would play on till doom infinity, kinda sucks.

I lost interest in 'em somewhere down the line. But they had some cool music.

I think the most recent album, The Guessing Game is the one I've enjoyed the most of their entire career. Been listening to them since the Soul Sacrifice EP came out (pre-Ethereal Mirror).
A loss to be sure, but they are going out on a very high note creatively...something that many bands with 20+ years under their belts cannot say.
I hope Jennings ends up in another band, he's a great guitarist.

He sure did and I really liked his gruff vocals and besides what did people expect from a former Napalm Death vocalist. The Guessing game was a pretty good album though I didn't like the fact that Dorian's voice wasn't more like his earlier material. The only other album I have is The Ethereal Mirror but it is one of my favorite metal albums of the early 90s.

I only got into them yesterday and I didn't mind his vocals, they fit in with the music they were creating.

Was never a fan, although they had one cool clip on MTV rotation in the early 90s:

Glad I got a chance to see them last year. It's a shame they're finishing, but it's good to see them bow out on a high.

I only The Ethereal Mirror and Supernatural Birth Machine. Although I do think Dorian's vocals are an acquired taste I think both those releases are great. Too bad they're breaking up.

Still need to get The Guessing Game, but they will be missed. I enjoy their music immensly. One of the first "doom" bands I ever heard (aside from Sabbath).
Is Lee quitting music to focus more on his record label? He's got some killer acts under his wing.

I don't think he said anything about that...just basically that Cathedral had a good career and it was time to put it to bed.

That's a bummer. I only have a couple of Cathedral discs but I always thought they were a very good band. Saw'em live once many years ago and they were great onstage too.

I sorta saw this coming. I had been into them heavily from the 1st album to Supernatural Birth Machine and then I gave up on them. I heard The Guessing Game and it did not catch me at all. I hope their last album kicks ass!

Bump for final album news...
Quote :
British doom legends CATHEDRAL are putting the finishing touches on what will be their last-ever album. Produced by Lee Dorrian and Garry Jennings, with assistance from Jaime Gomez Arellano, "The Last Spire" is scheduled for an April 2013 release via Rise Above Records.
The track listing for the CD is as follows:
01. Entrance To Hell 02. Pallbearer 03. Cathedral Of The Damned 04. Tower Of Silence 05. Infestation Of Grey Death 06. An Observation 07. This Body, Thy Tomb
Non-album track "Vengeance Of The Blind Dead will appear as a flexi disc on the front cover of Decibel magazine in their March issue (on sale February 7). The band also recently shot a promotional video for the track "Tower Of Silence", which will be available to view some time in January. The song will appear on an exclusive Rise Above Records CD sampler to be given away with Classic Rock magazine towards the end of the same month.
