When watching a film in a foreign language, do you watch it dubbed or subtitled?

dubbed. sure it looks hillarious but it lets me pay attention to what the actors are doing.

of course if we are talking of porn... no dubs or subtitles are really needed. fine acting like that tells the story on its own.

Laughing very hard Laughing very hard Very true. Besides, nobody watching those movies is listening to the dialogue anyway.

But seriously folks... I don't watch a lot of foreign-language films (other than an occasional Japanese monster movie), but on the rare occasion that I do, I prefer dubbed. Having to read subtitles distracts me from watching what's going on in the actual movie.

I prefer subtitled....and I watch an awful lot of foreign films...so I guess I have just trained myself to read and watch and not have either task detract from the other.

I've seen some horrible dubs. The best I can think of is Brotherhood of the Wolf. If all were as well done as that movie then I'd have to vote "dubbed." Unfortunately most dubs are pretty bad.

It all depends on the film. I love Godzilla movies but the dubbing is atrocious so I'd rather they be subtitled.Sometimes they just don't get the translation right ,goofy sounding actors doing the dubbing, etc.I think that helps garner the image of the chessiness (along with some questionable special effects,to be sure). However, just about anything else can be dubbed.

Ah, I understand it now Smile
Well, subtitles all the way! Almost everything we have to watch here in Slovenia is foreign, and thankfully, almost everything has subtitles (except for the cartoons). The dubs realy spoil the thing - I'm glad that I don't live in Germany as they're obsessed with dubs!! For instance, try to watch some episode of Married with Children in German on youtube Smile

This reminds me of the time I spent a month in Germany as an exchange student in the late 80s...I saw several movies while I was over there, all of which were American movies that had been dubbed into German. Talk about a surreal experience!! I had already seen one of them (the James Bond film "The Living Daylights") back home before I went on my trip, but seeing it again in a foreign language was just bizarre as hell. I kept listening to the voice actors and thinking "THAT doesn't sound like James Bond!"

Even funnier was one night my friend and I went to a video store and rented the original "Star Wars" (known as "Krieg Der Sterne" over there) just because I thought it would be a laugh riot to hear it in a different language after seeing it probably 100 times in English. What a hoot! After it was over I told him "Darth Vader didn't sound evil enough, and C-3P0 didn't sound right without his British accent." He said "C-3P0 is British? I didn't know that!" Smile

The unintentionally hilarious dubbing is one of the things that MAKE Godzilla movies so enjoyable for me!!

subtitles and original language. no matter which country. dubbed movies are crap. don't like it.
subttiles are more real and movie have official feeling than dubbed. dubbed are like not real.

sad but true ... (damn metalika) ... is that parents old grandparents here, always wants dubbed cos they didn't catch the speed of changing subtitles with actors.

so, it means, we have more dubbed in TV better said ALL of them are dubbed on TV.
DVDs of cors have to choose.i choose various lang of subttiles. nice to learn another words.

I'd definitely go for subtitles as well. The film kind of loses part of it's essence in dubbing it.

Having said that, old martial art movie dubs are hilarious.

Since about 99,9% of all the movies we see in Norway are foreign, I say we go for subtitled.

Dubbed films are for retartds who can't read their own language!
just kidding
