Yes, Charlie Christian is considered the first modern electric guitarist, not just because he started amplifying his guitar in the 30's, but because his playing style was single note line based, like horn players. Prior to that the guitar was basically just a rhythm instrument in jazz bands.

Yes, I'm also a fan of Django. I'm especially fond of the recordings he did with visiting jazz musicians from the states, there's a recording from the late 30's with Coleman Hawkins that is just masterful.
