Mix of both, rather he just took some already existing riffs (in the video game) and put some heavier elements while still utilizing syth/mixing stuff.

While there are no guitars, the syth elements can easily be translated into guitars.

HOWEVER, there are these vids, which are done with guitars.

Reminds me of those halloween theme cd's.
