Ultimatum's stomping ground burns to the ground!

Well, this SUCKS!!!! These are the clubs we play regularly in Albuquerque. They also are the clubs that bring in a lot of metal bands. I've seen bands like Overkill, Fireball Ministry, Iced Earth, Exodus, Nevermore, Kreator, etc. at these clubs.

The fire at El Rey Theater was reported around 6 a.m. today. It seemed to intensify around 6:45 and the roof apparently collapsed. The Golden West Saloon is engulfed in flames. The fire is so intense that firefighters can only fight the fire from the outside. They are fighting to save the Launchpad, another popular club for live music downtown.

Because of the fire, Public Service Company of New Mexico crews shut down power to the area. About 700 customers are without power in southwest Albuquerque.

We JUST performed at the Golden West this past Saturday and were scheduled to perform there again on March 21st.

The building containing El Rey Theater was built in 1929 by Luigi Puccini, cousin of opera composer Giacomo Puccini, according to the theater's Web site.

Are all these different clubs/venues inside one big building, or are they all located next to each other? It sounds like the entire block must be going up in smoke.

They are all connected together. The entire block of buildings is basically connected together.

Dang, that's a big ole fire. We had a big one in my town about ten years ago, when the smoke cleared an entire block was gone. Nobody was hurt cuz it started in the middle of the night, but the town lost a drug store, a five and dime variety store, and a very good Italian restaurant. I still miss that restaurant. Sad

Doesn't look good. Been keeping up with the goings-on on rocksquawk.com, which is the chat room for the Albuquerque music scene. According to one post, "Just heard an interview w/ theowner, she says the GW is done, "unless the community wants to do something with it."
She says the theater doesn't look too bad. Still no word I've heard about the Launchpad."
