Endgame is awesome. Definatly the best album since the early 90's era.
This Day We Fight is an awesome opener to the album.

Following the tremendous success of Countdown To Extinction Megadeth once again teamed up with Max Norman for an even more tame follow up. At this point in his career, Dave and Megadeth seemed less focused on being pissed off but much more focused on a #1 album. When time to record rolled around early in 1994 it was decided that since 3 of the band members now lived in Arizona, the album would be recorded there as opposed to somewhere like LA. Recording was begun at Phase Four studios, but problems early on forced the Deth dealers out of the studio quite fast. Mustaine still insisted on recording in his home state though, and since suitable quarters could not be found a studio was built inside a rented warehouse at the suggestion of co-producer Max Norman (dubbed Fat Planet In Hangar 18). Another interesting note here is that this would be the first time the band would write, arrange, and record the whole album in studio (even going so far as to record basic tracks live as a full band). Youthanasia was released on November 1, 1994 and debuted at #4 on the Billboard Hot 200. It also went gold in Canada in a half hour and achieved platinum status faster then any previous Megadeth album, becoming at the time the fastest selling Megadeth album to date. However while retaining a metal core this album followed even deeper into the shift that was begun Countdown To Extinction with an even slower, more radio accessible edge to it ala producer Max Norman focusing more on vocal melodies and more accessible arrangements overall. This was also furthered in the bands visual image with them dropping their traditional wardrobe and enlisting noted fashion photographer Richard Avedon to do all the photos and promotional shots for the album.

While this sounds like it would make a somewhat lackluster record this actually totally BLOWS past you out of the gate at Mach 3 with some great jackhammer riffs in Reckoning Day and while by and large they have abandoned their progressive elements on this album, this song features a beautiful melodic bridge and one awesome solo as well as great vocal work from Dave. Jumping almost instantly into another great instantly recognizable Deth track, Train Of Consequences just simply rocks with its chugging steam engine riff, passionate vocals, and one of the best Friedman solos ever recorded. A thundering drum piece tosses you into Addicted To Chaos without a chance to breathe after the monster of Train Of Consequences. This song has a very distinctive atmosphere (melancholic really) that wraps itself around you quite nicely with some great melodic pieces and a nice heavy bass line from Ellefson. A Tout le Monde is quite the great ballad with one hell of a catchy riff with a heavy edge to it and some beautiful instrumentation all around a truly great song despite the bizarre frenchiness. With such an impressive opening, its kind of disappointing that they fall into the same trap previously shown on Countdown, hooky songs but not particularly memorable and in a few cases almost filler sounding. Realistically, with the notable exceptions of Killing Road, the title track, Victory, the epic Blood Of Heroes, and Black Curtains which speaks of the old Deth in its' aggression quite nicely, the majority of the rest of the songs are pretty forgettable, although are all catchy as Smurf, so despite them not being particularly interesting they'll still stick to your brain for days. Overall, this is an EXCELLENT Heavy Metal platter, and one of Megadeth's best thought out albums with the overwhelming majority of it being good and memorable. One of the most glaring negatives here however is the solos, incredibly slowed down (really what the 80's band would've used as a riff instead of a solo) lacking completely of the speedy immediacy of the solos of the first four albums and the madness and opting for catchiness instead. Dave's voice has also changed to reflect the major style change of the album, but works well in the face of what they've changed to. A great album by heavy metal standards, and a fairly strong/good release by Megadeth standards, definitely a must have for your collection and one of the best albums of the 90's. Anyone who likes metal in general should find something to like on this, but it was all downhill from here. Also, a special note goes out to the b-side of the Train Of Consequences single (or a bonus on the Japanese version of Youth), Crown Of Worms. Originally written in late 1992 with none other then Diamond Head's Sean Harris, this song is full of some awesome thrashy goodness with a NWOBHM tinge (which is notably, if you're a Diamond Head fan, a variation on The Prince) and one of the best tracks Megadeth has done.

Notes: A sticker on initial presses of Youthanasia advertised a band website which was called Megadeth, Arizona. Fans could chat online in the Mega-Diner, correspond with the band through email, request songs to be played live, and read columns and tour diaries written by band members.

Train Of Consequences reached #29 on the Billboard Charts and the band later performed it live on the Late Show With David Letterman. A Tout Le Monde was also a charting single and had a music video but MTV refused to play it, fearing the lyrics endorsed suicide. The recording of the album was also captured on video and released as “Evolver: The Making Of Youthanasia”.

Youthanasia might not be thrash metal, but it's still one HEAVY record, and one of my favorites in the Megadeth catalog. It's almost got a doom-like quality to it, leaving room for a lot of experimentation that I think worked very well. With Dave focusing on more than blind aggression, the band was free to write good, melodic heavy metal with a lot of catchy hooks. Another thing I like was that Dave was still running the show of course, but every last song was co-written with someone in the band, so it really shows that yes, Dave is the ringleader, but when the rest of the band gets involved, they can produce a much better album than they would with Dave writing everything.

I love this album, the intro song with the heavy percussion and killer riff. At this point in their career Megadeth where on a creative and commercial wave. Megadeth where not just getting critical acclaim from the metal press but some of other mags such as worst rag to ever to hit the streets Spin sat up and took notice.

Like DC states the band is no longer concerned with being pissed off and more concerned with building on their success. Songs may have been a bit more radio friendly but there was still an element of fierceness and old fashion Mega Dave attitude.

Melodic but still heavy. I played this one to death when it came out! Still like years later. A good Megadeth platter.

I bought this the day it came out & I still feel the same way now about it as I did back then...it is my least fave Megadeth album, sure there are some good songs on it (and I like the album) but most of the songs don't grab me. Train Of Consequences was the only song by Megadeth I've ever hated, now I actually somewhat like it. I really like all the bonus material on the remaster though. Cool cover.

This was an album that I liked but due to the sound difference I felt they went the way of Metallica and I stopped listening and sold it off. Many years later after maturing as far as my listening habits (today I doubt I would have reacted the same way to the musical changes of Megadeth or Metallica) I got the album again and now enjoy it immensely and unlike Load (which I recently gava a second chance and somewhat enjoyed) it wasn't too long and riddled with filler like said Metallica album. I love this album and glad I finally grew up as a metal fan. Favorite songs are Train Of Consequences, Addicted To Chaos, A Tout le Monde, Elysian Fields, Blood Of Heros, Family Tree, Black Curtains, and Victory.

While this was not quite as strong an album as Countdown, it's still full of great moments. The technicality seems about on par with the previous album but if anything the speed of the songs has been throttled back a bit in favor of a bit more heaviness. The record was certainly written with chart success in mind, which it definitely attained, but I still like it maybe only a little less than Countdown.

At this point Megadeth certainly weren't all about speed and technicality but in my mind they more than made up for that with some good heavy songs that are memorable and make you want to sing along to 'em (something Dave seems to have forgotten a bit with his most recent release).
All in all I think it's a good Megadeth release with only a few filler tracks.

Haven't listened to YOUTHANASIA in a while but when it was current I played the hell out of it. I remember buying it on the first day of release at the Tower Records in my home town. I got a free Megadeth t-shirt with the purchase, that had a pic of Vic Rattlehead cradling a baby on the front and the back said "Where the Hell is Megadeth, Arizona?" (a reference to their then-new Internet site). Now that I think about it, that may have been the first time I had even heard of the Internet. How time flies huh? Laughing

I'm gonna have to give this CD a spin now that I think about it. Always did like "Reckoning Day," "Train of Consequences" and the original version of "A Tout Le Monde."

The album art and packaging was a little high-brow and artsier than I expected for a Megadeth album, but I love the album cover and how it makes a visual pun out of the album title.

Countdown To Extinction and Youthanasia are 2 great cds. I think Countdown is the better of the 2 but not by much. Good solid songs throughout. These 2 were their last good ones for a while but they will redeem themselves down the line.

Another killer record from Megadeth, another commercial success. I have read many reviews stating that this is a disappointing 'deth album, but I disagree. It's a more melodic product, but I think that suits them well. One can only suspect that the huge success of Metallica made Dave try to sound mellower. Nevertheless I really dig this album, and it's one of my fave 'deth albums. The politically laden lyrics are also replaced with more personal material. I believe that Dave was wrestling his inner demons, and had to get some of it out. Megadeth has always been about cool riffs, and that is what we get here as well. "Victory" is a cool tune, that is actually kind of a tribute to themselves. It contains titles of 20 other 'deth-tunes!

Killer tracks: Train Of Consequences, Addicted To Chaos, A Tout Le Monde, Youthanasia, I Thought I Knew It All, Victory

Killing Is My Business - For YEARS, this has been the lone 'deth album I didn't own. I had never even listened to it. I finally ordered it online a few weeks ago and have spun it four or five times all the way through since. I really like it. It isn't as thrashy as I was expecting it to be. I love the piano intro for the album. It's a good debut, but not a great album.

Peace Sells - I prefer the melodic heavy metal side of Megadeth over the thrashy stuff, so this one doesn't really work for me although there are few choice cuts like "Wake Up Dead" and "Peace Sells".

So Far, So Good - "In My Darkest Hour" is one of the Megadeth's greatest song, but the rest of the album is spotty.

Rust in Peace - Again, I'm not huge into their thrash stuff, so I won't act like this is one of the most amazing albums of all time. It's good though and the best of their first four. I LOVE the album cover though.

Countdown to Extinction - The first 'deth album that I really love but initially, I didn't care for it. Many people point to this album as the band's downfall, but what's wrong with melody?

Youthanasia - Megadeth's best and one of my favorite albums of all time. ZERO filler, you can easily sing along to just about every song. This, not Rust in Peace, is the album I always want Dave's latest album to aspire to.

HIDDEN TREASURES (EP) (Released March 30th, 1995)

Originally released as a bonus disc for european fans only in a special edition of Youthanasia, Hidden Treasures compiled all of Megadeth's soundtrack exclusives (and a single depending on what version you got) in one nice convienent package. Due to fan demand, it was quickly re-released worldwide (with Japan getting its own special tracklist) in July of '95. This album actually plays pretty well all in all, despite it being a compilation the original tracks highlight the bands progression with its new members during it's peak period and are excellently written with plenty of hooks, heaviness, and most importantly THRASH! These arent your average throwaway soundtrack songs by a long shot!

Generally, Megadeth covers are kind of hit and miss depeding on the song they pick, but No More Mr. Nice Guy kicks everything off with a bang with its thrashy, yet humorous edge and is one of the best cover versions these Megadudes have put out, and only as a 3 piece no less! After the somewhat goofy intro with that song, Breakpoint is where the EP really kicks into high gear, an excellent thrasher with a skull crushing rhythm and great solos, truly a Megaclassic! Go To Hell is an awesome menacing dark track with some bad ass solos and demands you bang your head to it! Angry Again takes everything a little slower, but ones again throws out a jamming bounce of a rhythm section and infectious chorus lines. 99 Ways To Die is without a doubt the best song found here, it completely just grabs you by the juevos from the beginning and thrashes your ass straight into the ground with all the aggression, speed, solos intact! Diadems, the last original track here is also a little darker, but follows nicely along with some melody quite reminscent of Youthanasia. Paranoid isn't too bad of a cover of the Sabbath classic but its not winning any awards either. Problems on the other hand is an excellent Sex Pistols cover, which puts their previous effort on Anarchy to shame!

Definately an album worth owning, as all the original songs are excellent, especially 99 Ways To Die, but the covers do come off a little goofy.

Notes:
No More Mr. Nice Guy featured on the soundtrack for "Shocker"
Breakpoint featured on the soundtrack for "Super Mario Bros."
Go To Hell featured on the soundtrack for "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey"
Angry Again featured on the soundtrack for "Last Action Hero"
99 Ways To Die featured on "The Beavis And Butthead Experience"
Diadems featured on the soundtrack for "Tales From the Crypt Presents Demon
Knight"

The Japenese version contains a radio edit of A Tout Le Monde and demo versions of Symphony Of Destruction, Architecture Of Aggression, and New World Order. New World Order was originally written for Zoetrope and appears on their album Mind Over Splatter and despite being listed as a demo is actually a finished song.

The map on the cover is a map of northern Arizona, with the city names changed to song titles. This is one of the only times Vic Rattlehead would not appear in the art for an album, with only his head appearing on a Calico Jack type flag on the back cover.

I like this little EP, it has some great songs and it follows very well considering the different eras this was recorded .

The only song I do not care for is their version of Alice Cooper's 'No More Mr. Nice Guy' I just thought it sounded toothless and that the band did not want to change it too much from the original.

'Problems' on the other hand is an excellent version, I am huge Sex Pistols fanboy but I like the fact that took this song and made it their own.

HIDDEN TREASURES is a cool disc; it was a convenient way to keep your Megadeth collection up to speed without having to buy a dozen different movie soundtrack and tribute albums. "99 Ways To Die" is one of my fave Deth tracks EVER, and "Go To Hell," "Diadems" and the Sex Pistols cover "Problems" all totally smoke.

I think I've given this EP more play over the years than the album that came before it (YOUTHANASIA) or most of the stuff that's come afterwards.
