That RIP section is the silliest thing on this forum. I don't get it at all.

Anyway, I'll repeat myself: Solitude Aeturnus - Hallowed Be Thy Name. Blows the original away.

Not quite, but it's still a great cover.

I knew we had done this before. I looked under "covers" in the search engine, but I guess you have to be really specific here.

Yeah you have to enter the correct key words or it won't turn up. It's not that big of deal since this is only the second time it was brought up.

Not trying to be an ass about this but that freakin' thread is over a year old.

Hell, I wasn't even a member then.

Are we really supposed to mine the RIP forum and resurrect fossilized threads before posting new ones?

Just askin'...

There will be a lot of new members that don't know about mining for the "old" threads so what's the point of all the policing? If it frustrates you just move on and let kmorg deal with it.

Anything over one year old should probably be deleted. I don't mind if old topics are brought up again.

I have to say that ICED EARTH did some amazing covers on that album they released, and almost every song they did surpassed the original. Even the ones from AC/DC,Maiden,Kiss,Cult, and Cooper

Forgive me the pun, but the original version totally slays Slayer.

Also one of the most powerful song-to-song transitions in all of metal when Here Come The Tears changes to the Dissident Aggressor.

Nah. I think Glover's production killed whatever strength the original had. Slayer's version proved how well written that song is.

The Green Manalishi and Diamonds and Rust by Priest

Even Priest figured out the original Joan Baez arrangement was better suited for the song, considering they started doing an acoustic version of the song, much closer to the original, with Tim Owens.

As for the Green Manalishi... it's tough. Priest does provide the metal edge, but I don't know if it's enough to call it 'better'.

This is a near impossible topic for me. I love a lot of covers, like Angel Dust's Temple of the King or Skyclad's Dreamer Deceiver, but usually it's because they are so different from the original. I don't know if I can name any songs that I truly feel are better performed by bands that didn't originally record them. I also love that insane version of Holy Diver by Otyg, and Nevermore's Love Bites, that version of Aces High with Jeff Scott Soto and Nuno Bettencourt... but they are not better than the originals. At least I can't think of songs that were originally 'good', that clearly turned out better after another group re-recorded them. Mostly I just hear an upgrade in production and a downgrade in performance. Be it technical or just emotional.

I used to think Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower was one, but I don't know anymore really. Sure he does bring in a lot to the song instrumentation-wise (the original arrangement is kind of run of the mill), but, and I hate to say it, Jimi never was a great vocalist. Neither is Dylan, he is horrible, but damn if he didn't put his unique stamp on his songs. You can't recreate that.

Maybe if I hear some of the original tracks Rainbow covered in the 70's, I'll change my mind, but for now I'll just say 'pass' to this topic.

Anyway, it's kind of silly to compare covers and originals - cover versions are meant to be entertaining. It's like a tribute. Giving a new spin on an old favourite. "What if band X recorded a song in the style of band Y?" It's successful if you like it. 'Better' just seems like an ugly word to me.

I'm not gonna get a red-ass about it. It's no big deal. I only bring it up if it was a topic that I know posted in. I only care about the things I say anyway. And I don't like repeating myself. I repeated my self once. Once. Smile
