I think there may have been a thread similar to this, but only in regards to metal. This is all-inclusive.

The main one I had in mind was Lenny Kravitz's cover of The Guess Who's "American Woman". TERRIBLE cover. The Guess Who version was an energetic hard rock classic. This is a bland, lifeless abomination that seemingly overlooks everything that made the original so beloved. I love ya Lenny, but you need to pick your cover tunes more wisely.

http://www.cracked.com/funny-2359-progressive-rock/

Progressive Rock is an attempt to musically orgasm as many times as possible during a 15-minute song.

Progressive

rock is categorized by a sacking of traditional song structure, complex

rhythms, odd time signatures and a sense of inherent superiority over

other rock genres

Because of this, it's pretty much never been popular

It is the only rock genre in which the term "flute solo" has any meaning

I was looking over my music collection, and noticed alot of great CD's from 1981, and I remember MTV starting out and alot of cool New Wave stuff being played. Also 1978 seems to pop up quite a bit,, and 1987. Personally, I also remember 1991 being a good year. For some others, it might be 1968. I'm going to have to ...

I especially love their albums Definitely Maybe and Whats the Story. Also they definitely put bands like Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys, Powderfinger and most of these soft indie rock filth to shame. Also I heard a rumour that Noel Gallager helped Lars Ulrich with his drug problem back in the mid 90s

This is one of my all time favorite non-metal bands. Very dark, very gothic, and some of their stuff is very heavy (though IMO they were never metal). Depending on which era of the band you are talking about. They are from Germany and IMHO, are very underrated.

Been on a big kick lately, if the name doesn't sound familiar, it's the band who did 'Tower of Strength' and 'Wasteland':

an easy target if one wanted to say 'pompous', 'poppy', etc..a very radio friendly band in many ways, to be sure, but when it's done right I can get way into it, and the Mission has tons of great songs with wonderful diversity. Think of something like old U2 (ugh..even though old is the least worst) mixed with Zep (ugh) and you're on the right track....yes, I realize ...

Who all likes these guys?

A few years ago I got a GH cd from them - and it really grew on me, so recently I purchased their first four albums on cd (the wooden nickle years).

Those early albums are a lot different from what they later became, but I gotta say - I like them a lot! Their debut is pretty proggy, but it's good!

What do you guys think?

I always loved the Soundgarden track "4th Of July" and this quote from Chris Cornell certainly explains it a bit more. I guess his fried brain is my musical enjoyment.

Quote:Chris Cornell:

“One time I was on acid, and there were voices ten feet behind my head. The whole time I’d be walking, they’d be talking behind me. It actually made me feel good, because I felt like I was with some people. At one point I was looking back, and I saw that one person was wearing a black shirt ...

I just got Wolfmother's new album Cosmic Egg and it is awesome. Anyone who is a fan of bands like Sabbath or Led Zeppelin will definitely like this album. It's drenched in heavy guitar and fuzzy bass with catchy riffs, just the perfect combo. Here are a few of the songs off of it.

Anyone into this band? I have one of their albums and just spun it today. It's pretty good.

This is the band started by Mark Solomon (the former lead singer of The Crucified - a crossover band from California). This band is a lot different from The Crucified though, as it's more alternative.
